Herpes Zoster Pictures Herpes zoster is the name of the virus that causes chickenpox. Once the child gets infected with chickenpox, the virus would still remain on the body. When the immunity levels are slightly lowered, then the virus becomes active and attacks the nerve passage of the body. They are also called as Shingles. You have more chance for getting herpes zoster if you had an attack of chickenpox during young age and if you have crossed 60 years.

The initial symptom of herpes zoster infection is tingling and itchy sensation on the skin, associated with rashes. It appears as red patches of blisters secreting a fluid like discharge after 2 or 3 days. This is the period during which it becomes highly contagious. The rash begins to form on the adjacent area of spinal cord like belly or chest. Some people may get fever, stomach pain, chills, joint pain, headache and lesions on their genitals. In rare cases, there may be partial loss of vision and taste problems. On physical examination of the body, the doctor can identify the virus of herpes zoster.

Antiviral medicines such as acyclovir and valacyclovir are given to the patients. In some cases, anti inflammatory drugs like corticosteroids are given to reduce inflammation. If necessary, your doctor will prescribe pain killers depending on the intensity of blisters and pain.
