Pelvic Ultrasound Preparation: Procedure For Men And Women . Pelvic ultrasound is an imaging procedure where high frequency sound waves are transmitted into the pelvis and the returning echoes are received, modified, displayed and recorded on imaging instruments.Pelvic ultrasound is utilized for diagnosing and detecting abnormalities and disease of pelvis. It is one of the modern imaging techniques in the armament of medical practitioners. Ian Donald of Glasgow and Steward Taylor from USA are pioneers in developing this new diagnostic procedure.People suffering from pelvic and abdominal problems, are generally asked by physicians to undergo ultrasound test, it helps to detect problems that are not identifiable after a physical examination, especially in obese individuals. Pelvic ultrasound is performed routinely for a pregnant woman. It helps to determine the condition of fetus in the womb.Let us study pelvic ultrasound in depth and how it works.
Pelvic Ultrasound Procedure For Men And Women
As mentioned earlier, through an ultrasound the physician can come to know about problems in the abdomen and pelvis. Whenever sound enters in the body, some of the sound is scattered and reflected back. The reflected echoes are detected by transducer (probe) applied on the body surface, in this case on the pelvic surface. The echoes in the transponder are processed as images of internal organs of the pelvis, and displayed on the monitor (imaging screen). These images of organs are then interpreted by the expert. Pelvic ultrasound is performed in two ways; the first is trans-abdominal ultrasound and the second is trans-vaginal ultrasound.Trans-abdominal ultrasound: it is suitable to check the organs of abdomen and pelvis. The physician rubs gel or olive oil on the abdomen and pelvic area. He then moves the probe (transducer) in transverse, oblique, and longitudinal sections. The image of the internal organs is visualized on the screen. The ultrasound helps to detect diseases of bladder, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tube etc.Trans-vaginal ultrasound: it is used to detect any gynecological abnormality in women. The woman is made to lie down on her back and the probe (transducer) is introduced in the vagina. The image of various genital organs such as ovaries, uterus, and cervix are seen on the monitor. The abnormalities are easily detected on from the images. It is particularly useful in detecting ectopic pregnancy. In men trans-rectal ultrasound is performed to check prostate. It is done with a special probe.
Preparation For Pelvic Ultrasound Procedure
It is important to know the preparation procedure for pelvic ultrasound, especially when trans-abdominal ultrasound is performed.
- The ultrasound procedure is usually conduced in a doctor’s clinic or in a hospital set up.
- Take prior appointment with the doctor.
- Carry all medical documents of the disease if any.
- The most important part for pelvic ultrasound is that your bladder should be full. For this reason you should drink water 1 to 2 hours before the appointment time. Consume 3 to 4 glasses of water slowly in a span of 2 hours, before you reach the doctor’s office.
- In this period you should not pass urine and hold it until the procedure is performed.
- Now you will lie on the examination table in the doctor’s office with the pelvis exposed.
- Special gel or olive oil is applied on the skin surface of the lower abdomen, where the transducer is applied. It facilitates the passage of ultrasound beam and movement of hand held transducer.
- The transducer creates and receives the sound waves, which are scanned and interpreted on the monitor.
- The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes.
- After pelvic ultrasound you can go to the toilet and empty your bladder.
- Trans-vaginal does not require full bladder so you can relax.
The above steps for preparation of pelvic ultrasound ensure that your test is carried out smoothly.
