What Is Tinea Versicolor










Tinea versicolor is a medical condition wherein the skin on the trunk and proximal extremities become filled with rashes. This ailment is caused by fungus. Often, the patient will experience spots that may be oval or irregular in shape. These rashes may even form skin patches that could become grouped together.


Sometimes, the patient might also experience fine scaling of the skin. The skin can also heat up and feel prickly, a sensation that causes both pain and itching. This is often observed when the patient is exposed to a heated environment or the body is heated due to exercise and other strenuous activities.


Still, this only occurs when the person is not sweating yet. Once the person sweats, the pin-prick sensation goes away.


Diet to Prevent and Treat Tinea Versicolor


Just like a few other ailments, what the patient eats can either prevent it or worsen an ailment. Well, the food intake can also help cure the ailment. Here are some dietary tips that patients might want to try when they have tinea versicolor:



  • Try to increase the intake of healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and reduce intake of junk foods and oily foods since these can cause the patient to have more problems with this ailment.


    A healthy diet consisting of foods that are high in vitamin C, A, and B complex will help the body keep itself healthy and free of such ailments.

  • Yogurt should become a part of the patient’s daily diet when he/she has a problem with tinea versicolor. This will help him/her maintain the healthy bacteria levels of the body and help prevent infections.

  • Garlic is also a very good anti-fungal food and eating a couple of fresh cloves of this in the meals will help keep tinea versicolor at bay. Patients can also opt to eat this raw or take garlic capsules to help prevent this ailment from becoming a problem again.

  • Avoiding processed foods and products made with a lot of sugar and white flour can also help the patient prevent the recurrence of these spots.


Treatment For Tinea Versicolor



  • Bathe in lukewarm water but make sure that it is not too hot.

  • Tea tree oil can be rubbed on the skin patches.

  • Grind rice to form rice flour. Add a few spoonfuls of fresh tomato juice. Mix thoroughly to form a paste. Apply this paste on the affected areas after bathing in lukewarm water.
