What Causes Facial Itching and Its Treatment to Stop Scratching









Itching of the face is a discomfort for anyone, young or old, male or female. Like any kind of itch, there are causes behind it. These causes can range from an irritation of the skin or as a result of an allergic reaction from a substance or food. The common reaction when itching is felt is to scratch and scratching can lead to unintended injuries of the skin. In order to maintain the skin’s integrity and restore the overall comfort of the individual, stopping the itch is crucial. The itch can only be stopped when the cause is identified.


Facial Itching



  • Refers to an itching sensation felt in the face alone or also involving the neck.

  • Most cases of itching of the face are simple to treat and do not cause any long term effects to the patient.

  • There are even cases of itching of the face that can be relieved by simple home remedies or improvement of hygienic practices.

  • For cases of itchiness that is unrelieved by home remedies or even with the observance of hygienic practices, medical consult should be sought.

  • Before undertaking any treatment of any kind, it is important to consult with a doctor first to accurately identify the cause and to be able to start the appropriate treatment.




What Causes Facial Itching


Many causes for itching of the face have been identified, ranging from a simple irritation to something as complicated as an allergic reaction.











  • Dry skin

  • Poor hygienic practices

  • Allergic reactions from hair products, facial cleansers, food, medications, and other allergens.

  • Insect bites

  • Sunburn

  • Herpes simplex virus

  • Bacterial skin irritations or dermatitis

  • Viral skin infections such as chicken pox and fifths disease.

  • Fungal infection

  • Rosacea

  • Melanoma

  • Underlying medical conditions such as liver disease and kidney failure.


Facial Itching and Redness Treatment


Itching of the face is sometimes accompanied by rashes and redness. Treatment relies on an accurate diagnosis.


Home Treatments:



  • Some cases may be relieved by proper hygiene such as washing of the face.

  • For cases of dry skin, using a moisturizer usually relieves the dryness and hence relieves the itching.

  • Aloe vera may be used for cases of sunburn to help soothe the skin and lessen the redness.

  • Avoid the use of hair or skin products that have triggered allergic reactions in the past. Prior to use, test the product first as stated in product instructions to check for any possible allergic reactions.

  • Washing the face properly at least twice a day will help keep the face free from any allergens or irritants that may be causing the itch.

  • Use a mild soap for the skin or a mild detergent for washing of the clothes.


Medical Treatments:



  • Antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral medications may be administered for itching that is bacterial, fungal, or viral in nature.

  • Antihistamines may be administered for allergic reactions.

  • Corticosteroids may be used to help lessen or decrease any redness or swelling that often accompanies itching caused by an allergy.
