PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is the most common health condition among women who complain of delayed or irregular menses. Delayed menses in women may be distressing, especially in women who are sexually active and do not want to conceive.

Some women may try to induce menses earlier then their expected date. For example a woman taking part in athletics or sports event, or a woman whose traveling dates are coinciding with her expected date of menses.

Menstruation can be induced early with the help of birth control pills. When a woman is suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome, a course of birth control pills may regularize her menses. Women below the age of 40 are generally prescribed birth control pills to either postpone menses or induce the menses early than the date of expectation.

Contraceptive pills (birth control pill) contain hormones estrogen and progesterone, or only progesterone hormones. These two female hormones play an important role in women’s menstrual cycle. Many times birth control pills may not suit a woman; there may be unwanted side effects such as heaviness in breast, mild dizziness, nausea etc. in such cases, consuming natural herbal preparations are effective in inducing menses.

Before consuming any herbs or medicine it is necessary to know the reason for delayed menses. There are several causes for delayed menstruation besides PCOS, such as overweight, excess of physical exercise, thyroid problem, mental and emotional stress, depression, malnourishment, anemia etc. You have to consult the gynecologist to know the reason behind delayed menses if pregnancy is ruled out.

If the problem of delayed menses is frequent, and every time you have to seek medical opinion, watch your weight. If you are overweight, try to reduce your weight. Fat cells in obese women may produce extra amount of estrogen hormone. Excess of estrogen may interfere with regular menstrual cycle.

Natural Ways To Induce Period With Herbs

In olden days, when birth control pills were not available, people tried herbal remedies to induce menstruation. Ginger and parsley are the two wonder herbs used since time immemorial for inducing menses. These herbs are also called emmenagogues.

You can drink two or three cups of parsley or ginger tea in a day. While preparing the tea, make sure that it is strong and concentrated. Parsley has properties that contracts the uterus and relaxes the cervix simultaneously. This allows shedding of endometrial membrane from the uterus wall and expelling it out from the relaxed cervix. Drinking ginger tea or parsley tea is beneficial when the cause of delayed menses is due to mental stress, hormonal changes caused as a result of thyroid disturbance.

The fruit pineapple, papaya, and mango are considered to be effective in inducing menstruation. Drink a glass of pineapple juice in the morning, mango juice in the afternoon and papaya juice in the evening when you want to induce menses early.

Since stress, anxiety and fear are three psychological factors responsible of delaying menses, avoid excessive stress by doing yoga and meditation. Stress causes disturbance in hormonal levels in the body and thus in the regular menstrual cycle.
