Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition which is characterized by scaling of the skin. The condition results in the formation of red papules, which are covered by plaques of thickened skin. These plaques are formed due to rapid proliferation of skin cells. This abnormal proliferation is triggered by lymphocytes. In most cases, psoriasis is characterized by mild, faint, dry patches. In severe cases, the entire skin may be covered with red papules and scaly skin.










Psoriasis is an incurable skin condition which is chronic in nature. In most cases, psoriasis is associated with intermittent acute exacerbations.


The symptoms are usually worse during winters, but may also be trigger by stress or unhealthy diet.


Psoriasis affects both males and females equally. It is also equally prevalent across different races. The condition can affect individuals of any age, though it is more frequently diagnosed among adults. The skin condition often interferes with the quality of life of an individual, due to the skin appearances. Social interactions are considerably hampered. Recent reports suggest that people with psoriasis are more likely to have elevated lips, cardiac disease and diabetes.


What Causes Psoriasis On Elbows?


Psoriasis is more frequently observed around the elbows.


The exact etiology for the condition is not completely understood, though it is reported to be a combination of different factors.



  • Genetic predisposition is considered to play a major role. Genetic factors result in abnormal immune response. This abnormal immune response results in proliferation of skin cells and psoriasis.

  • Environmental factors are considered to trigger the exacerbation of psoriasis. Stress is the common trigger factor; however faulty diet, obesity, etc have also been identified as contributing factors.


Psoriasis is classified into different forms depending upon the manifestations.



  • Psoriasis vulgaris is the most common type.

  • Guttate psoriasis is characterized by dot like spots.

  • Inverse psoriasis affects the folds under the buttocks and underarms.

  • Pustular psoriasis is characterized by formation of pus filled blisters.


Natural Remedies For Psoriasis On Elbows


Psoriasis as an ailment is not curable. Simple home remedies and natural treatment options will only be useful to alleviate the symptoms during an acute exacerbation phase. While certain claims of psoriasis cure are available, there is not proven scientific research on the same.



  • Local application of turmeric paste on the skin, during an episode is very effective. Turmeric has anti oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which help alleviate symptoms of redness, itching and scaling of the skin. Turmeric with Aloe Vera gel is more effective. Aloe Vera has a soothing effect on the skin.

  • Local application of walnut oil or almond oil is beneficial. These oils are loaded with vitamin A and vitamin E which are essential for skin health. Vitamin A helps improve the health of the epidermis (i.e. the outer layer of the skin). Vitamin E helps strengthen the collagen tissues in the deeper layers of the skin.

  • Dietary regulations play a vital role. Avoid processed and synthetic foods. Opt for organic foods especially fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid diary and meat. Dairy products and meat may contain hormones which may be detrimental for the overall health and further deteriorate the skin condition.

  • Mediation to cope with your stress will be critical to deal with this disorder.
