How To Tell If You Have Blepharitis

How To Tell If You Have Blepharitis
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the edges of the eyelids. It
is a common problem for both children and adults and can be chronic. It
can involve the lids, the lashes, the meibomian glands (which secrete
the oil layer of the tear film and help lubricate the eye), and the
conjunctiva.

Blepharitis may be due to either Staphylococcus epidermidis or
Staphylococcus aureus (types of bacteria), or seborrheic dermatitis (a
type of skin inflammation of unknown cause), or a mixture of the two.
The most common complaints are itching and burning.

The eyelids should be cleansed regularly with a warm solution of
salt water. Eye makeup should be avoided. A physician may prescribe
antibiotic or corticosteroid drugs, but continued treatment with these
may cause a skin allergy.
