Psoriasis is a condition which is characterized by thickening, inflammation, scaling and persistent dryness of the skin. This results in appearance of unsightly patches on the skin in select areas. The condition is a chronic autoimmune disorder. The pathogenesis of the ailment is not clearly understood.










In about 50% of the cases with psoriasis, facial psoriasis is observed. Though in most cases, facial psoriasis is mild, it is very difficult to treat. Psoriasis around the eyelids is even more complex condition, as complications can interfere with the functioning of the eye.


What Causes Psoriasis On Eyelids?


The cause for psoriasis is poorly understood and is generally associated with faulty immune response.


Experts suggest the condition is caused due to abnormal activation of the natural immune system which leads to inflammation of the skin. This causes increase multiplication and proliferation of the skin cells. Increased proliferation leads to scaling, skin damage and thickening.


Some experts believe the condition has a genetic predisposition. Others consider environmental factors like medication, infection, injuries and stress to be contributing factors.


There are certain factors that can aggravate the development of the condition,



  • Increased exposure to sun rays or ultraviolet radiation aggravates the symptoms.

  • Yeast infection of the skin can also aggravate the condition.

  • Psoriasis of the eyelids is characterized for formation of scales on the eyelashes. The edges of the eye lashes become red, inflamed and crusty.

  • Prolonged inflammation can lead to the rim of the lids to turn upwards or downwards. When the eyelids turn downwards they can led to irritation of the eyeball and subsequently interfere in the vision.

  • Psoriasis of the eye is a rare condition, but can develop as a complication.

  • Overuse of tropical steroids for treatment of eyelid psoriasis can increase the risk of development of cataracts and glaucoma. Consult your ophthalmologist on regular basis to avoid these complications.


Natural Remedies For Eyelid Psoriasis


The recommended treatment regimen focuses on correcting the abnormal inflammatory response in the body. The treatment regimen can be divided into two parts,


  • Routine Lifestyle Modifications:


    • Use gentle skin care products like non soap cleansers and moisturizers on the affected skin.

    • Use sunscreen to protect the skin, especially when outdoors.

    • Use de stress techniques to help reduce stress levels. Yoga and meditation can help reduce stress levels considerably.

    • Increase intake of organic foods in your diet. Avoid processed foods or foods containing preservatives.

    • Increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants that can help boost skin health and overall immunity.


  • Specific home remedies:


    • Prepare a paste with equal parts of turmeric and honey and apply it on the affected part. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory effect while honey has a soothing effect on the skin.

    • Consume two to three garlic flakes each day. Garlic helps regulate the body’s natural immune response and fights inflammation.

    • Local application of Vitamin A and Vitamin E oils is very beneficial. Use walnut or almond oil on the skin on regular basis. This not only rejuvenates the skin, but also heals damaged tissues.
