Mastoiditis in Adults: Middle Ear Infection Symptoms and Treatment . Mastoiditis is inflammation of mastoid bone. It is caused due to bacterial infection in the middle ear. Or rather it is a complication of otitis media (middle ear infection).

Mastoid bone is situated at the back of the ear. The posterior section of temporal bone is made up mastoid bone.

Though common in children, mastoiditis in adults can have a serious outcome if not treated.

Mastoiditis can be acute or chronic.

In acute otitis media the purulent fluid may enter the mastoid antrum and the air cells. This results in fluid accumulation. In some cases the bacterial infection develops in this fluid resulting into signs and symptoms of mastoiditis.
