Amblyopia Refractive Disorder – Treatments, Symptoms, Causes

Amblyopia Refractive Disorder – Treatments, Symptoms, Causes .

Amblyopia Refractive Information

Amblyopia refractive is one form of visual system disorder that usually happens during childhood. There is poor transmission or no transmission at all of image to the brain causing indistinct or poor vision that normally affects one eye although both eyes can be affected if both are deprived of clear and good visual image. The deprivation of vision can be triggered by other vision-obstructing disorders like cataracts and misaligned eyes or strabismus. However, refractive amblyopia can physiologically occur in the course of adulthood after alcohol or tobacco consumption.

Amblyopia Refractive Causes

Refractive amblyopia is the common result of anisometropia, a condition where there is unequal refractive error connecting the two eyes.

There is an abnormal development of half of the brain’s visual system and the difference in refraction results for one eye to be provided by the brain with a clear image while the other eye will have blurred vision. Pediatricians would usually miss diagnosing amblyopia refractive in children because both eyes physically appear normal.

Symptoms of Amblyopia Refractive

Most people who are suffering from amblyopia refractive are not even aware that they have them especially those who have a mild condition probably because of the absence of physical abnormality. However, those with severe forms of refractive amblyopia can experience visual disorders such as poor depth perception.

Symptoms of the condition include:

  • Poor spatial sharpness
  • Low or reduced sensitivity to contrast and motion
  • Difficulty in seeing three dimensional images

Treating Amblyopia Refractive

Amblyopia refractive treatment is done by correcting the error of refraction early. Treatment in children involves a very simple principle, which is to make them use the weaker eye or the eye with reduced vision to slowly make it stronger. This can be done with the use of prescription lenses, patching and using topical atropine on the eye with the better vision.

Prognosis of Amblyopia Refractive

If the treatment of amblyopia refractive is done consistently, there is bigger chance for it to be successful. This is the reason why treatment needs to be continued until children are eight or ten year old but no longer even if the vision stops on getting better. No amount of drops, patches, glasses or any form of treatment can fix amblyopia refractive. Over-patching or penalizing the good eye in the course of treatment must be carefully observed otherwise reverse amblyopia in the strong eye can happen. In this case, either both eyes will be affected or the weaker eye is treated and the ‘œonce’ good eye will need another treatment.
