Ametropic Amblyopia Information:

Ametropic amblyopia is an anomaly in the condition of the eye wherein the image of a distant object cannot be focused by the retina. This is caused by refractive errors in the optic system of the eyes. Because the image of distant objects cannot be formed on the retina, the person’s vision of these objects becomes blurry. Sometimes the condition is brought about by the abnormal length of the eye or its abnormal refractive powers which causes the abnormal vision. There is a study performed on 66 patients from the age of 9 to 35 who were referred to a particular clinic. The study involved testing whether or not patch therapy would indeed help patients to treatametropic amblyopia. All of the patients were assigned into two groups; the treatment group and the control group. Based on the visual acuity of the defective eye of the treatment group, there were to have 3 to 6 hours of a daily patch on their good eye with the use of an eye pad, while the control group will have no patching used on both eyes.

The study lasted for six (6) months and the visual acuity of both eyes of the two groups were again examined following the patch therapy.

Ametropic Amblyopia Treatment:

Patients with ametropic amblyopia in the treatment group had a mean visual acuity before the patch therapy of 0.39±0.17 LogMAR. After 3 months, the visual acuity improved to 0.19±0.09 LogMAR and after 6 months, it again notched to 0.07±0.03 LogMAR. The control group did not display any significant change in the group’s mean visual acuity after 3 months and also after 6 months. Despite the difference in the duration of the use of the eye patch, there is no significant difference shown in the mean visual acuity of those in the treatment group.

Patch Therapy for Ametropic Amblyopia:

The study showed that the visual acuity in the patients who used patch therapy on their good eye improved. It also proved that despite the age of the ametropia amblyopic patients, it is not an obstacle for the promotion of patch therapy. Hence, patch therapy is proven effective and is highly recommended in the rehabilitation of the visual acuity of patients suffering from ametropic amblyopia.
