The main function of these glands is to keep the vagina well lubricated by secreting vaginal fluid during sexual intercourse.

When the opening of these gland is obstructed there is fluid built up in the gland, resulting into swelling and forming a cyst which is called bartholin cyst. Many times the accumulated fluid gets infected forming an abscess. The cyst remains small and painless if it is not infected.

Causes Of Bartholin Gland Cyst

The bartholin gland becomes active after puberty and the cyst commonly occurs in sexually active woman between 20 to 30 years. The cause of bartholin cyst is due to accumulation of fluid in the bartholin gland. There is an obstruction at opening of the gland, either due to a skin appendage or an infection.

The infection can be due to many types of bacteria. Some bacteria are related to sexually transmited diseases such as gonococcus bacteria, and Chlamydia trachomatis. Other environmental bacteria such as E coli, streptococcus pneumoniae and H influenza can also cause infection and blockage of bartholin gland.

  • Gonococcus: This bacterium is responsible for gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted disease. It is responsible for fifty percent of bartholin cyst.
  • Chlamydia trachomatis: this is also a sexually transmitted disease.
  • E. coli is responsible for gastrointestinal infection. Sometimes it infects the urogenital tract.
  • Streptococcus pneumonia: This bacterium is the causative organisms in pneumonia etc.

 Home Treatment For Bartholin Cyst

Usually there is no need to treat a bartholin cyst if it is small and does not produce any symptoms.

Treatment is sought when the cyst gets enlarged out of proportion, and the amount of discomfort it causes to the woman. Treatment may be necessary if there is an abscess formation. In most cases bartholin cyst can be treated at home.

  • Sitz bath: here the patient sits in a tub containing warm water for 15 to 20 minutes. Warm water helps the cyst to rupture and drain itself after few days. The home treatment is useful when the infected bartholin cyst is small.
  • A warm compress with a cloth is also useful treatment at home for bartholin cyst. It promotes drainage of the cyst in a natural way. Sometimes the warm heat might open the blockage and allow safe passage of fluid.
  • If the cyst is infected, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to kill the infective organisms.
  • Bartholin cyst can be avoided by keeping the vaginal area clean. Practicing safe sex methods, preventing injury while riding bicycle by cushioning the seat.
