The symptoms of lung congestion depend on the underlying disease. Breathing difficulty, shortness of breath, cough, pain in the chest, running nose, wheezing, blood in the cough medically known as hemoptysis, and audible breathing sound are some of the normal lung congestion symptoms. Hoarseness, lack of energy and fever, are another associated symptoms of lung congestion. The cough may be productive or non productive. In chronic cases, besides excess buildup of mucus in the lungs, there are chances of lung destruction. It may happen that any one symptom or few symptoms can occur at any one given period. The other symptoms may not present or can occur after some days of illness.

Natural Remedies for Lung Congestion

  • Steam inhalation is the best natural way for lung congestion. Boil water in a bowl. After removing the bowl from the stove, cover you head with a clean towel and inhale steam. You can also put few drops of eucalyptus oil in the boiled water and inhale the steam. The heat of the steam helps to liquefy the hard mucus in the lungs. Be careful that the water is not so hot that the steam burns your face.
  • Gargle warm water two to three times in a day. Add a pinch of salt in the water. It helps to liquefy the mucus and help in getting rid of lung congestion.
  • A hot Epsom bath on alternate night is very useful during the acute stage of lung congestion.
  • When the mucus in the lungs is hard, a tea prepared from aniseed is effective home remedy for relieving the congestion and associated pain.
  • Drink hot soups and broths containing garlic and tomatoes. Garlic is effective against bacteria and tomatoes contain vitamin C, which is necessary to improve the immunity.
