Chronic Atrial Fibrillation: Symptoms, Treatment And Prognosis . Atrial fibrillation is a condition which is characterized by abnormal beats or rhythm of the heart. The condition is fairly common and currently affects over 2 million adults in the United States alone. The condition normally develops after the sixth decade of life and is more common in males compared to females.

Chronic atrial fibrillation also referred to as persistent atrial fibrillation is a condition which is sustained and doesn’t stop spontaneously.

Symptoms Of Atrial Fibrillation

Though some individuals may never experience any symptoms with the conditions, others would experience fairly distressing symptoms. Some of the symptoms of the condition include,

  • Palpitations or irregular heart rhythms
  • Sensation of tightness and pain in the chest
  • Light headedness along with a sensation as if the heart is racing
  • Mild shortness of breath with fatigue is observed in moderate cases
  • Severe symptoms include shortness of breath and grasping for air, confusion and mental disorientation, chest pain, fainting and generalized fatigue and exhaustion

In general the prognosis of chronic atrial fibrillation depends upon the severity of the condition.
