Epispadias, Hypospadias: What is Epispadias, Treatment .

Epispadias

Epispadias is a congenital anomaly. In case of epispadias in men, the external urethral opening is situated on the dorsum of the penis.

Incidence of Epispadias

There are usually three Epispadias varieties that are found-

  • Glandular Epispadias.

  • Penile Epispadias.

  • Total Epispadias.

It is associated with ectopia vesicae (incomplete development of anterior bladder wall).
  • Like hypospadias, in the penile variety of epispadias, the penis is curved upwards.

    Treatment of epispadias

Glandular epispadias variety may not require any operation.

For the other 2 varieties of epispadias, urethroplasty or reconstruction of the urethra has to be performed.

In penile epispadias variety, the operation is usually performed at the age of 3yrs./> The margins of the groove distal to the external opening are made raw and undermined and are sutured in the midline over a catheter. This is known as Duplay’s operation.
