Tears have always been an essential form of expressing one’s emotions. However, tears do not only function to indicate whether we are feeling happy or sad. This condition happens when the tear duct becomes blocked and tears are not carried out through the normal rate of tearing but instead, flows out from the nostrils or may overflow from the eye.

  • Increased tearing that can overflow on the face and cheek
  • Mucus discharge from eye
  • Formation of crust in the eyelids
  • Redness, pain, or swelling under the eye
  • Swelling and redness of the tear duct or in the white area of the eye

    This is because babies especially premature ones have  underdeveloped tear duct systems.
  • Using the index finger, massage the corner of the eye daily until the duct is unclogged. Make sure to wash your hands to avoid contact of germs into the eye.
  • In serious cases, clogged tear ducts have to be corrected with surgery. Children with this condition are usually given general anesthesia prior the operation to remove the obstruction.
