Lower Eyelid Lump, Chalazion Swelling | Reduce Eye Inflammation

Lower Eyelid Lump, Chalazion Swelling | Reduce Eye Inflammation . Question:

First I had a stye. Then a bigger red lump running up and down the red lower eye lid. My eye was swollen on the outside too. A doctor gave me steroid pills for 2 weeks and it got better. Now it’s back. It’s been almost 8 months now. I’m afraid it will damage my eye.

Answer:

A chalazion is manifested as a swelling of the eye lid, that occurs when a gland in the upper eye lid or lower eye lid gets obstructed. There are several glands and they secrete oil in to the tears.

These glands, when they get blocked, increase in dimension and cause a swelling.

This swelling may enlarge in size, may become red, warm, and even painful.

A stye is also a bump or a protruberance caused due to blocking of a gland, but, it occurs due to an infection, while a chalazion develops due to an inflammation of the area, not infection.

Chalazion Treatment

  • Applying warm compresses for 10 minutes, frequently through the day, reduces swelling and promotes drainage of the gland. Make sure that the napkin and water are clean.
  • Lightly massage the area everyday.

  • Never fidget with or scratch the bump.
  • A doctor’s / ophthalmologist’s prescription for antibiotic eye drops in case of bacterial infection is necessary.
  • Occasionally, if a chalazion lasts for weeks, or recurs, it may require a surgery, more so, if there is mild blurring of the vision.
