Medical Laser History

• It was in 1917 that Albert Einstein laid down the foundations for lasers using his quantum theory of radiation. More studies, postulates, and theories were put forward after that.
• Still, it was not until 1953 that an operational device was created from those theories. This device was called “maser” and uses microwave radiation.
• In 1957, Charles Hard Townes and Arthur Leonard Schawlow developed the “optical maser”. At about the same time, Gordon Gould worked on his “laser” which has a similar principle as the optical maser.
