Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Its Symptoms And Natural Treatment

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Its Symptoms And Natural Treatment . Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is the infection of female genital organs. Female genital tract is a continuous passage extending from vulva to the ovaries. So the infection taking place anywhere can spread to the whole or part of the passage. Pelvic inflammatory disease usually develops due to sexually transmitted diseases (STD) such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia infection.

Most often the infection starts in the vagina and if unchecked, spreads further upwards to the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and the ovaries. Untreated pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to infertility and adhesion (scaring), which may be a reason of chronic pain in the pelvis later on.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is often seen in young women between 18 to 25 years. The risk of PID increases in women who are sexually active and having multiple partners. A woman can catch infection from an infected partner. Bacteria causing gonorrhea and Chlamydia are usually the cause of pelvic inflammatory disease.

Even though STDS are the chief cause of PID, the infection can occur without sexual contact in certain cases such as spread of the bacteria while implanting intra uterine devise, or during dilatation and curettage done for various reasons such as abortion or endometrial biopsy.

Symptoms Of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

In many cases Pelvic inflammatory disease remains asymptomatic or with mild symptoms and may be detected only when complication arises such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy or chronic pelvic pain. For this reason a woman should be aware of the symptoms of PID, and report to her physician if she experiences it even if they are mild.

Following are usual symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease:

  • Pain in the lower abdomen and the pelvic region.
  • Chronic pelvic pain.
  • Low back ache together with lower abdominal pain.
  • Discharge of muco purulent or pus like secretion from vagina, urethra (passage from where urine is let out), and the cervix.
  • Increased vaginal discharge.
  • Painful sexual intercourse.
  • Bleeding during sex.
  • Frequency of urine more at night.
  • Pain and burning while passing urine.
  • Inflammation of vagina, vulva and cervix.
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
If the infection goes further, it can cause ‘Bubo’- swelling of glands in the inguinal area (groin). Periods become irregular, or spotting in between menses.

 Inflammatory Pelvic Disease Treatment

If you experience any of the above symptoms and you are sexually active, or if you suspect of sexually transmitted disease, contact your health care provider immediately. After proper history and examination, he may advise to do certain tests; however before the test results come, he may prescribe antibiotics to be taken. This is to prevent the long term risks of PID.  It is best to start the treatment as soon as possible to lessen the symptoms and reduce the severity.

  • Medicines: Doctor may prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicine for relieving pain. If after medications the symptoms still persist, he may advice to remove the IUD, if it is implanted.
  • Surgery: Long standing pelvic inflammatory disease can cause scarring and abscess especially in the lining of the fallopian tubes. Surgery may be necessary to remove the adhesion (scarring) or draining the abscess.

Natural Remedies For PID

Some home remedies for pelvic inflammatory disease include,

  • For relieving acute pain from pelvic inflammatory disease, use of sitz bath is very effective. All you have to do is to sit in a tub containing warm water for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Quit smoking as it may reduce your immune status and it may increase the risk of second round of attack.
  • Increase the intake of citrus fruits and foods containing vitamin A, B complex, C and Zinc. They all help the immune system to fight against the organisms in one way or other.
  • Use of condom also helps to prevent pelvic inflammatory disease when there are multiple partners.
