There are several reasons for deep seated throbbing eye pain; most of them are due to diseases of eye.

• Glaucoma: It is an eye condition where there is constant throbbing pain in the eyeball. In glaucoma the intraocular pressure increases. The pressure increases when the fluid inside the eye gets blocked, or if there is increase of its production. Glaucoma is commonly observed in old people.
• Iritis: it is a condition related to inflammation of iris. The colored part that you see in eye is called iris.

  Eye trauma, autoimmune diseases, tuberculosis, ocular herpes, can cause iritis.
• Optic neuritis: it is a medical term used for inflammation of the optic nerve, nerve which is responsible for registers and carries visionary image to the brain. Reasons like, viral infections, multiple sclerosis and bacterial infection can cause increased pressure in the eye and severe throbbing pain in the eyeball. Patient may have diminished vision.

Treatment Options For Throbbing Pain In Eyeball

Throbbing pain in eye should never be neglected, even if you suspect it to be a minor ailment. This is because if it turns out to be something major, then early treatment may help to prevent complications such as loss of eyesight.

• In case of glaucoma, the initial treatment may begin with conventional eye drops and oral or intravenous medications to reduce tension (pressure) in the eyeball. Once the pressure becomes normal, the patient has to take medications and instill eye drops for long term. If the patient does not have relief and there is risk of vision loss, doctors may recommend glaucoma operation.
• Optic neuritis may require involvement of an ophthalmologist and a neurologist to determine the exact cause and further treatment.
• In case of sinusitis which is responsible for throbbing pain in eyeball, patient may be prescribed antibiotics. He is also advised to take steam inhalation. Steam inhalation will liquefy stuck mucus in sinuses and facilitate its drainage.
• In case of migraine headache, patient is prescribed migraine medications and pain killers.
