They grow in clusters like grapes and hence they are called staphylococcus (staphyle- grape like). Staph infection is infection caused due to staphylococcus bacteria. These bacteria generally colonize in skin and mucus membrane without causing any symptoms. However, they may enter into the blood stream through cuts and wounds giving rise to various staph infection symptoms.

  • Staphylococci can invade tonsil causing tonsillitis.
  • Staphylococci present in mouth can also invade parotid glands causing a condition called bacterial parotitis. Parotid gland is salivary gland which produces saliva in the mouth. This type of bacterial parotid infection sometimes becomes confusing with viral parotitis.

  • Pustular discharge from the lesion.
  • Ulceration at the site of infection. For example, when tonsils are infected they become enlarged, red and filled with yellow patches of pus.
  • Production of excessive salivation in mouth.
Systemic symptoms include:

  • High grade fever.
  • Chills and shivering.
  • Fast pulse.
  • Headache and body ache.
  • Weakness, dizziness due to insufficient ingestion of food and water.

Staph infection is a serious disease. However, the severity of infection may depend on several factors such as the virulent strength of the bacteria, body resistance, age of the patient etc.
