This virus when present in body leads to AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Unlike other viruses in body, HIV virus cannot be destroyed once it infiltrates in the body. HIV attacks specific immune cells called T cells or CD4 cells. Over a period of time this virus attacks and kills so many T immune cells that it becomes difficult for the body to resist and fight against any disease.

The reason behind women being more susceptible to HIV can be categorized into two parts, first is physiological and second is socioeconomic.

Physiological cause:

• The load of virus in semen is considerably more than that in vaginal mucus.
• As compared to penile tissue, the membrane of vagina is thin as a result it is more susceptible to tear and scratch.
• Semen stays for long time in vagina.
• Teenagers and women at younger age are at greater risk of suffering from abrasions and lesions in mucus membrane while performing sex.

Socioeconomic reasons:

• The potentiality of women is always undermined in male dominated society. The problems are overlooked. Still there exists an inequality between women and men in all aspects of life.
• In male dominated society, women are unlikely to be able to insist on use of condom or to take preventive measures against HIV, even if husband is HIV positive.
• Infidelity of women is considered unethical, while extra marital sex, use of female sex workers, trafficked girl by men are presumed to be expected.
• In many brothel women may not be in a position to insist the customer to wear condom with an apprehension of losing the customer. As a result not only they are at risk of getting infected with HIV infection but if they are HIV positive, they are suffering from HIV infection, they may pass to the customer.

Prevention Of HIV Infection In Women

• Many women are unaware of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases especially in poor countries. It is imperative to educate women against the risk of HIV and the way to prevent it.
• Since the main source of HIV infection is through sexual contact, the risk of exposure to virus can be greatly reduced by using condom.
• She should avoid frequent changes of partners. At the same time she has to ensure that her partner is HIV negative.
• At social level, voice against women discrimination, prostitution, and social issue should be raised at all level. There should be constructive approach to solve this problem in every strata of society.
