Bone Cancer Treatment
Bone cancer usually begins in arm or leg bones. It doesn't include cancers that started in another part of the body and spread to the bones. The bone cell's DNA has an error leading to uncontrolled growth, forming a tumor. The tumor can spread to other parts of the body. Some types of bone cancer are found mostly in adults (osteosarcoma), or children (Ewing's Sarcoma) or older adults (Chondrosarcoma). Symptoms include: bone pain, tenderness and swelling, a broken bone, weight loss and fatigue. Risk factors: hereditary genetic syndromes such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome and retinoblastoma, Paget's disease and radiation therapy. Surgery is a common bone cancer treatment; it can range from removing the entire limb to removing only the cancer. Radiation therapy is often used to kill cancer cells remaining after surgery; it may also help with other symptoms and pain. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells with chemicals given intravenously. Chemotherapy or chemo combined with radiation is often used to shrink a bone cancer before surgery so the surgeon will not have to amputate the limb.
