Correlation between GERD and Sleep
GERD or gastroesophageal reflex disease is a condition where the contents of the stomach majorly acid flow back towards the esophagus and throat to cause heartburn and other symptoms. Sounds simple but this is chronic sort of illness which left untreated could cause threatening complications and conditions in the body. GERD and sleep are deeply correlated because most of the symptoms of the disease are observed at the night time and often associated with sleep troubles. In the daytime the severity or occurrence of chafing thighs symptoms is quite restricted but it seem to bother the person at night causing insomnia and sleeplessness. The exact reason for occurrence of this acid reflux in children or adults is till unknown. But through some researches certain predisposing factors like age, obesity and other seem to play the role in severity and occurrence of this condition.
In common the acid reflux at daytime might cause little heartburn and vomiting but in the night the symptoms worsen. When the person is sleeping he might woke up choking and coughing due to the acid reflux. Acid reflux at night chokingis predominant because of the position of the person in sleep that is horizontal which propels the stomach acid more towards the throat and larynx which thereby causes choking and coughing in the throat. Regular choking at night with heartburn could also lead to asthma and pulmonary fibrosis in many patients. Some patients also show damage to the esophagus and surrounding areas due to constant exposure to highly potent acidic contents that sometimes lead to the above mentioned complications.
A small number of people who complain "I woke up choking" also complain about sight of blood in the cough or in mouth when they wake up from their sleep. This condition is thought quite rare many times lead to cancer of the esophagus or throat. Sometimes the occurrence of acid reflux is due to consumption of faulty food and ingredients. Foods such as chocolate, caffeinated beverages, spicy stuff, preparations that are full of tomato or mint lead to acid reflux at the night time. If someone consumes these foods at the time of dinner he might experience acid reflux at night chokingwhich is attributed to enhanced acid production in the stomach that trails backwards in horizontal position. The condition is entirely treatable perhaps if you don't self diagnose yourself. There are certain over-the-counter medications present but they only provide temporary relief from the symptoms. For long time relief proper treatment needs to be followed form expert gastroenterologist.
