Deep Vein Thrombosis Remedies

Deep Vein Thrombosis Remedies
Initial treatment for thrombosis should be done in a hospital. While natural blood thinners exist, the potential for loosening the blood clot so that it enters and remains in the lung is great and necessary dosage information for thrombosis is unknown. Blood flow to other organs will be cut off and they will be severely damaged. Treatment goals focus on reducing the blood clot and preventing the formation of new clots. Blood thinners are given and monitored closely; they prevent the clot from getting bigger but do not dissolve the clot. In time, the body will naturally reabsorb it.

If anything goes wrong, it immediately becomes a life-threatening medical emergency. Survival chances improve dramatically if it happens in a hospital.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep Vein Thrombosis is a potentially deadly condition that can occur with minor or no pain. A blood clot (thrombus) develops in one of the body’s deep veins, usually in the legs. Sitting still for a long time (as in a plane) can cause it. A medical condition affecting how blood clots can also cause the thrombus or the cause may never be known. If the clot breaks loose, it can enter the lungs, block blood flow and cause a pulmonary embolism. Lack of blood oxygen can damage other organs and may end in death. Untreated, about 30% of people with this condition will die, usually in a few hours. A prompt diagnosis and treatment can save your life.

Natural Remedies for Thrombosis

There are a number of natural remedies for thinning the blood. People who have had had a deep vein blood clot are normally put on a blood thinner (Coumadin or Plavix) for an extended period of time to prevent more blood clots, a stroke or a heart attack. If someone wishes to completely or partially replace reliance on Coumadin with a natural blood thinner, dosage and quality become very important and almost impossible for the average person to determine. The primary advantage of the prescription medication is that it’s a known quantity for quality and dosage so can be easily increased or lowered as necessary.

Both natural and prescription blood thinners carry the risk of bleeding, necessitating monitoring. Signs of bleeding are bruising easily, bleeding gums or blood in the stool or urine. Natural blood thinners may be more or less effective than the prescription medication, so should be used under the supervision of your doctor.

WARNING: If you have had a thrombosis and are currently taking a prescription blood thinner and are also taking any of the natural treatments below, consult your doctor. You may be successfully taking any of these for another ailment, but because of their natural blood thinning properties you could end up taking too much blood thinner with dangerous consequences.

Herbal Blood Thinners

Garlic, ginger, ginkgo, feverfew, dong quai and dried tree ear mushrooms have all been shown to be natural blood thinners. These herbal remedies are taken every day as successful treatments for many ailments.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is a very useful natural supplement taken because of the benefits derived from Omega-3 fatty acids. It is usually taken because of how it benefits the heart and circulation. Unfortunately, the blood thinning effect helpful in preventing heart attacks can be dangerous when taken with blood thinning medications.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an incredibly valuable natural supplement also present in many foods. Studies find that it should not be taken with blood thinners because it will increase the bleeding risk. Researchers were unable to determine exactly how much Vitamin E taken with blood thinners would cause excessive bleeding, but felt that 400 IU/day would be the maximum that should be taken.

Thrombosis can become deadly so quickly that it is initially treated in a hospital whenever possible. Natural blood thinners are effective, but no dosage information exists for treating deep vein blood clots. Since either too little or too much blood thinner can have very serious consequences, the advantage of using a prescription blood thinner is that the quality and dosage are consistent and can be adjusted as necessary.
