How To Get Rid of Itchy Pimple on Labia or Genital Acne

How To Get Rid of Itchy Pimple on Labia or Genital Acne

Genital acne is similar to facial acne, back acne, chest acne, and other types of acne in the body. There are many causes behind its development but the common cause is blocked or inflamed glands that lead to the rise of a pimple.

Pimple on Labia

  • Also known as genital acne or Hidradenitis suppurativa or acne inversa

  • Genital acne refers to an inflammation of the apocrine glands found in the pubic region.

  • Causes can include:

    • Hormonal changes – especially puberty or menopausal women.

    • Poor hygiene – laxity in washing of the genital area.

    • Drug/medication reactions

    • Stress- stress increases secretion from apocrine glands.

    • Poor diet – diet that is high in fat and oily foods.

    • Ill-fitting, synthetic underwear – traps sweat and does not allow ventilation.

    • Ingrown hairs – trapped hairs inside hair follicles from improper shaving or even waxing.

  • When dealing with genital acne, it is important not to confuse the condition with other genital conditions such as genital warts or molluscum contagiosum.

  • While this may not be a common genital condition, it is also not uncommon.

  • Genital acne does occur, but it occurs under-reported due to hesitancy and embarrassment.

  • Genital acne can go away on its own without treatment.

  • Genital acne is also very responsive to preventive methods in most cases.

The treatment lies on the cause of the pimple.

  • Do not touch or agitate the pimple because when left alone, it can go away without treatment.

  • Wash the skin gently with oil-free antibacterial feminine wash or cleansers.

  • Pat the skin dry. Do not rub it to avoid agitating the skin.

  • Wear cotton underwear to allow better genital ventilation and to help absorb sweat.

  • Do not attempt to pop the pimple as this can become infected.

  • Apply warm compresses on the pimple.

  • Wearing loose or better-fit clothing instead of too-tight jeans or leggings.

  • Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet, avoid oily and fatty foods.

  • Do not use just any over-the-counter acne product because most of these are not meant for use on genital acne.

  • For pimples that do not respond to conservative and non-medical treatment, medical consultation is advised for treatment using medications.

  • Oral medications may be prescribed by the doctor to combat genital acne.

  • Prescription hormonal pills may be prescribed for genital acne that is triggered by hormonal changes.
