What Causes Red Veins In Eyes: Treating Red Veins That Won’t Go Away









Main cause of the appearance of red veins in the sclera or the white portion of the eye is the irritation, dilation, and swelling of the blood vessels within. This irritation and enlargement are caused by several factors which include the following.











  • Dry air can cause irritation of the eyes which often results in prominent red veins in the eyes.

  • Too much exposure to the sun and dust particles.

  • Foreign body that can damage or cut the eyes.

  • Allergic reactions and colds.

  • Trauma that can be caused by too much straining or coughing.

  • Fatigue and stress.

  • Subconjunctival hemorrhage or red eye.



  • Blepharitis. This occurs when the eyelash follicles in the eyelids get inflamed. The cause of this infection is a skin bacterium. Aside from having red veins in the eyes, it can also cause crusty eyelids, sensitivity to light, dry eyes and blurred vision.

  • Pink eye or conjunctivitis. This is the infection of the membrane lining of the eyelid and the part that coats the surface of the eye or the conjunctiva. It is a highly contagious condition that is caused by a virus, bacteria, allergy, and certain products that cause irritation.

  • Corneal ulcers. This is caused by a viral or bacterial infection and appears on the eye’s outer covering.



  • Uveitis. This occurs when the uvea, iris, choroid, and the ciliary body get inflamed and is associated as an autoimmune disorder and contributed by infection and toxin exposure.

  • Acute glaucoma. This is a sudden increase in pressure brought to the eyes that can be severely painful and can lead to vision problems.

  • Scratches in the cornea caused by extensive use of contact lenses.

  • Bleeding problems caused by too much use of medications for blood thinning.

  • CRVO or central retinal vein occlusion.

  • Grave’s disease or hyperthyroidism can also result in prominent red veins in the eyes.


How To Treat Red Veins In Eyes That Won’t Go Away?


Here are some simple treatment options for red veins in the eyes,



  • When eyestrain, fatigue or stress has been causing the condition, give the eyes plenty of rest.

  • A patient with conjunctivitis should avoid touching his eyes and wearing contact lenses. Apply warm compress for bacterial conjunctivitis. As for allergic conjunctivitis, apply cold compress several times a day. Keep the hands clean to avoid the spread of the infection.

  • For patients with blepharitis, apply warm compress to the eyes twice a day for at least 5 minutes. Keeping the eyelids clean relieves blepharitis symptoms.

  • Homeopathic remedy plassiflora is considered to be beneficial for eye conditions including conjunctivitis and eyestrain.

  • When red veins are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, eye floaters, loss of vision, swelling of the eyelids, cornea that becomes cloudy, and the pupil size becomes unequal, a visit to the doctor is a must. Specialized eye drops will be given. For severe cases, surgery will be done.
