There is a real concern for American children that are largely obese. This is where the BMI scale comes in. The BMI scale is used to determine if you are at a healthy weight, overweight, obesely overweight, or morbidly obese.
A formula is used to determine your BMI. In order to determine your BMI you will need to take your weight and divide it by your height (in inches) squared, then multiply that by the BMI conversion factor of 703 and round up to the second decimal and you will have your BMI.
To determine if you are in the healthy range or obese you need to go by the following BMI range:
18.5 and lower means that you are underweight
19 to 25 you are at a healthy weight
25 to 30 you are overweight
30 to 40 you are obese
40 and above means that you are morbidly or severely obese
After you find your BMI and understand the BMI results, you may find yourself at risk for your health. When your BMI is high, you will need to determine what steps you need to take to lose weight in a safe and sensible way. You will be able to determine the amount of calories you need to take in each day to keep your current weight and when you want or need to lose weight you need to lower your calorie intake.
There are some factors not considered in calculating your BMI, for instance, an athlete may have a higher BMI because of their build but considered overweight. The BMI has good points but each person's case may be different and you will need to determine if you are actually overweight or if your body's build is influencing the outcome of your BMI.
