Do you experience burning sensation in your chest just right below your heart? Do you constantly suffer from cough, wheezing or asthma attacks? Then you might be suffering from Gastroesophagal Reflux Disease or simply known as GERD. This condition is common to people who have weak lower esophageal sphincter. The LES is the opening in the passage of esophagus which opens and closes when the food has passed. The LES of people with GERD does not close that is why the gastric acid climb up the esophagus causing the painful burning in the chest.


Improve your diet
There are many food restrictions for people suffering GERD. If you are suffering from this condition, you need to avoid acidic foods, tomatoes, chocolate, fatty foods, spices and others which the doctor does not recommend eating. Basically, choose the foods that will not upset your stomach.


When it comes to beverages, you must avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol. These help irritate and destroy tissues in the different organs of the body. If you want to get rid of GERD, avoid the foods you that are bad for your health.


You must also remember to regulate the way you eat. Do not eat one large meal as your stomach may reject any excess food. You can eat frequently in small meals so that your stomach will have enough time to digest the food you intake.



Walk around
After you eat your meal, you must make it a habit to walk around. This will boost your digestive system and there will be not much food left on your stomach since it will be easily pushed down your digestive tract. When you eat at night, do not just sleep right away. The food will just sit on your stomach and it can easily climb back your esophagus which may even cause you to throw up.


Strengthen your stomach
You can strengthen your stomach and digestive system by doing exercises. Exercise will keep your body moving, thus, digestion is sped up and indigested food will be easily eliminated.


Get proper rest and sleep
The best resting position for people with GERD is lying on their back. But always remember to elevate your back and neck by putting two to three pillows underneath your body. The inclined position will hinder the acids from climbing upwards, lessening the chance of regurgitating.


Take medications
There are some over-the-counter medicines which you can purchase to help you cope with GERD. Antacids like Tums and Rolaids, which are calcium tables, will help lessen the pain in your stomach. Although simple OTC medicines are not really proven to eliminate GERD, at least, it can take away your heartburn. Some medicines containing sodium bicarbonate and milk of magnesia can also help you feel lighter.


Check up with your doctor
GERD is not a simple condition. As a matter of fact, there is no exact treatment that will completely eliminate GERD. If you are suffering from this, you just have to constantly schedule check up with your doctor so that you will be given the proper course of action for GERD.
