Scar Tissue Pain

Scar Tissue Pain
The adhesions formed due to damage of original tissue after a severe physical injury or any surgeries are known as scar tissues. These tissues are formed as a part of natural healing mechanism wherein fibrous connective tissues are created to act as a barrier for the wound or the injured part. Over a period of time these tissues grow thick and dense as compared to normal tissues since they get only limited supply of oxygen as well as blood. At times due to inflammation of nerves in these tissues give rise to scar tissue pain.

Scar tissue pain varies depending upon the kind of injury that has resulted in scar and location of scar. If the scar tissue is recently formed than it is more painful and may develop an itching feeling, reddishness and tenderness. At times scar tissue pain can be so severe that it may affect the sleep of the individual. In case of hysterectomy or some other abdominal surgery scar tissue pain is mostly accompanied by other serious symptoms such as swelling and pain in the abdomen, occasional bowl movements, nausea, vomiting etc.

Scar tissue pain can also occur if some nerve beneath the tissue is compressed. The gravity of the pain in these cases depends on the compression of the nerve. If the nerve is constantly compressed then the pain is felt continuously, otherwise it is occasional and may pain while doing some activity.

To reduce scar tissue pain one generally retorts to medication that may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines or using ointments such as antihistamines or corticosteroids to combat pain. Of late interferon is also administered to promote the growth of healthy collagen thereby reducing the pain. In most extreme cases people may even opt for surgical interventions to get relief from scar tissue pain. The other treatment for reducing pain due to scar tissues include sheeting with silicone gel, heat treatment by ultrasonic waves, massage etc. It is generally recommended to take massage from a professional therapist. One should also take proper care after injury and reduce the instances of formation of scar tissues as well.
