Impetigo is an infection caused by either or both staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria. This type of bacteria is commonly seen on children that adults. This infection will cause your skin to have blisters. Not all blisters are impetigo, let me remind you. In order for you to be sure that it is, certain culture tests will be conducted. Just a brief review, impetigo has two kinds. First is the non-bullous type which is the common form that is caused by both bacteria. You will see that the skin will have small blisters or what you can call scabs. These blisters will turn yellow or honey-colored crusts that are usually seen around the nose, arms and legs. Antibiotics
Since the culprit of this kind of disease is bacterial infection, the only solution to your problem is antibiotics. Now, I have to warn you, antibiotics are not the kind of drugs that you can just let you drink. You have to get professional help. Visit your doctor and he will be the one who will give the right kind of antibiotics, the dosage and the duration of the treatment plan. Just an overview, these are the antibiotics that will be helpful: penicillin, erythromycin, azithromycin and cephalosporins. However, in mild cases, impetigo can be handled by an antibiotic ointment such as Mupirocin (Bactroban).
Quarantine
Impetigo is a contagious disease brought about by direct skin to skin contact. With that in mind, it is imperative that you isolate the person with impetigo to prevent it from spreading to other kids. Your child may be requested to stay at home for a while. No worries because Impetigo is usually no longer contagious after 25 to 48 hours starting with the first day of treatment.
Hygiene
Aside from the medication and treatment that you will be having from your doctor, it is best that you keep your hygiene to the maximum level. You simply wash the infected areas for at least two times a day. You have to use a mild and unscented soap, water and clean gauze. This is to prevent it from getting irritated. This would also help in softening the crust and eventually getting rid of them as well. Although it is not needed to take all the crust off, it would be very important to keep all infected areas clean as possible. This is also the best way to prevent Impetigo in the first place.
