Acquired Hemolytic Anemia: Causes And Treatment For Hemoltic Anemia

Acquired Hemolytic Anemia

The term hemolytic anemia refers to a condition which is characterized by early destruction of red blood corpuscles. This implies that the blood cells are destroyed and eliminated from the blood circulation before they complete their normal life span. Hemolytic anemia can be inherited or acquired.

In case of Acquired hemolytic anemia, normal blood cells are produced by the bone marrow; however an underlying disease condition results in the premature destruction and elimination of these cells. There are several factors which attribute to acquired hemolytic anemia

Causes of Acquired Hemolytic Anemia

The causes of acquired hemolytic anemia include the following,

  • Malaria or black water fever, tick borne disease and some toxic chemicals are responsible for the condition

  • Snake bites may also result in acquired hemolytic anemia

  • Immune disorders, infections and reaction to certain medications can result in hemolytic anemia

  • Blood transfusion, may result in hemolytic anemia if the blood grouping and typing is not done adequately

  • Acquired Hemolytic Anemia Treatment

Here are a few simple recommendations and treatment options for management of hemolytic anemia,

  • Avoid cold temperatures.

Cold temperatures can result in premature breakdown of blood cells. Protect your hands and feet from exposure to cold using gloves and stockings

  • Blood transfusion is often recommended in moderate forms of hemolytic anemia

  • Corticosteroids can reduce the breakdown of cells, especially when it is associated with an autoimmune disorder.

  • Finally, bone marrow transplants are recommended in severe forms of acquired hemolytic anemia
