Bland Foods for Upset Stomach


There are many causes of an upset stomach, it could be something as simple as indigestion or it could also be caused by diarrhea or some infection. Bland foods for upset stomach are usually prescribed.










What is Bland Food?


Bland foods are usually prescribed to somebody who has diarrhea or an upset stomach. These are foods that do not have strong flavors so as not to worsen the patient’s condition.


Here are some bland food diets and diets for an upset stomach and similar conditions.




  • Diet for Vomiting – patients who are vomiting are not prescribed any solid foods. They may have some electrolyte replacement drinks and a little bit of dry toast or dry crackers. Solid foods in someone who is vomiting can lead to aspiration and aspiration pneumonia.




  • BRAT Diet – Banana, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast Diet is ideal for patients who are experiencing stomach cramping, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal distress without the vomiting.




Foods in the BRAT diet are low in fiber and are easy to digest. Bananas are important because they have potassium.


Patients may also take broth, saltines, and clear liquids when recovering from upset stomach.

  • People with diarrhea can benefit from the BRAT diet




  • Boosting fluid intake may also help to combat the fluid loss experience




  • In children, it may also be necessary to add some electrolyte supplements to the drinking water.




What to Do For an Upset Stomach?


Other than following the BRAT diet or eating bland foods, the following may also be suggested.




  • Chamomile or Ginger Tea – These have been shown to have a calming effect on the stomach. The warmth of the tea may help pass gas and the heat of the ginger can help soothe spasms.




  • Antacids – If an upset stomach is caused by indigestion or hyperacidity, an antacid may be given to patients




  • Rest – Upset stomachs can be painful because of cramping so rest is necessary to help minimize stress, which can aggravate the condition.
