Scorpion Sting Symptoms: First Aid for Scorpion Sting









Not all species of scorpions are dangerous to humans. In fact, only a small percentage of scorpions can actually cause lethal symptoms to an otherwise healthy, adult individual. One common problem with a scorpion sting is that not many people are aware that they have been stung by a scorpion. In order to know whether a sting is in fact caused by a scorpion, there are telltale signs to look out for.










Scorpion Sting Symptoms


It is important to know the symptoms of a scorpion sting, especially in scorpion infested or prone areas, so as not to confuse the symptoms with a wasp or spider sting.


Knowing the symptoms of a scorpion sting will also help in the timely delivery of accurate and appropriate treatment or antivenom.



  • Pain, burning, or tingling sensation at the affected site

  • Malaise or weakness

  • Sweating

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Salivating

  • Numbness

  • Abnormal head and neck movements

  • Eye twitching

  • Heart palpitations

  • Breathing difficulties


Severe reactions:



  • loss of consciousness

  • convulsions

  • hypotension

  • shock

  • death


Scorpion Sting First Aid



  • Place ice pack over the affected area for up to 2 hours.

  • Elevate the affected limb to heart level.

  • Acetaminophen may be administered to relieve pain.

  • Calcium gluconate 10% solution may be injected intravenously for muscle spasms.

  • Diazepam may be administered to help with severe convulsions.

  • Administer antivenom as necessitated.



  • Never administer morphine or meperidine as this worsens respiratory depression caused by the venom.


Scorpion Sting Treatment



  • Wash the area with clean soap and water.

  • Apply ice pack over the site of the scorpion sting.

  • Administer acetaminophen to relieve pain.

  • Call 911 or poison control for other necessary treatments.

  • If stung by a Bark Scorpion, the individual should seek immediate medical intervention.
