The mineral iron is required in our body to produce red blood cells. Deficiency of iron results into a condition called iron deficiency anemia. It can be due to poor intake of iron containing food or problem in the absorption of iron from the intestine or blood loss.










Iron is better absorbed in ferrous (fe) form than in the ferric form. Slow fe iron supplement is usually prescribed by the doctors in case you are suffering from iron deficiency anemia.


Slow fe iron supplements are available in tablets and capsules, they have better absorption rate in the intestine in contrast to immediate release iron supplements.


This is so because iron released from slow fe iron supplement is gradual for a period of time.


Whenever you take iron supplements inform your doctor if you are allergic to any iron products, either oral or parenteral.


Side effects of slow fe iron supplements is less than immediate iron release supplements. This is because of its controlled delivery system.


The adverse effects of slow fe iron supplements are mainly gastrointestinal such as:


Epigastric discomfort: feeling of nausea, vomiting and heart burn are often felt when you take this supplement. In such cases the tablets should be taken after meals.


Another side effect is diarrhea.


Some people may suffer from constipation.


Black colored stool or dark green colored stool.


Urine may be dark colored.

Severe allergic reaction resulting into hives, itching, breathing difficulty, and swelling of face and lips, this condition requires immediate medical attention.


Most of the slow fe iron supplement ingredient contains ferrous sulfate, calcium phosphate and ascorbic acid.
