Tetracycline is an anti-biotic that is frequently prescribed by dermatologists to manage severe cases of acne. There are a few side effects associated with the drug, but on the whole it is tolerated well by the body. Tetracycline fights propioni-bacterium acnes. These bacteria are found in the skin and cause acne. Tetracycline prevents their growth and multiplication, and thus, combats acne effectively. Tetracycline also exerts an anti-inflammatory affect on the lymphocyte function, thereby treating acne.










Effectiveness of Tetracycline for Acne


Tetracycline has been proved to be decidedly effective in the treatment of acne.


It reduces redness and inflammation associated with the condition, fights the bacteria and speeds up the process of healing.


However, it is advisable to visit a dermatologist to settle on the correct dosage and frequency of the drug. Tetracycline is generally to be taken on an empty stomach, ½ an hour before meals or 2 hours after. Never combine the drug with milk or antacids. Also, see that it does not get stuck in the esophagus, it may cause ulceration.


Dose prescribed by your dermatologist may be 1 gram, twice / thrice during the course of the day or one dose per day.


Follow ups with the doctor are essential to understand the progress and to alter the dosage accordingly.


Tetracycline for Acne Side Effects


Tetracycline causes quite a few side effects. These are: skin rash, headaches, gastric disturbances, liver disorders, entero-colitis, and hemolytic anemia.
