Hydrogen Peroxide for Ear Infections

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a colorless, odorless liquid and is used mainly as a disinfectant. Hydrogen peroxide is also an antiseptic agent. Hydrogen peroxide is potent oxidizer thus releases nascent oxygen, when it is applied to tissues. Hydrogen peroxide has a broad spectrum of activity.

Mechanism of action of  Hydrogen Peroxide

  • Application of hydrogen peroxide solution causes an effervescence which mechanically removes the tissue debris from otherwise inaccessible regions.
  • The action is of short duration. Solution of Hydrogen peroxide has a poor power of penetration thus does not combine with tissue proteins and only cleans it locally.

Hydrogen Peroxide Benefits

  • Hydrogen peroxide is used for cleansing wounds to external or internal ear canal, abscess in ear canal due to any infection and for the removal of adhering dressings and irrigation.

Ear Infection and Hydrogen Peroxide

  • Hydrogen peroxide can be used in infections of external ear e.g. in pinna infections or furuncles (boils) and in cleaning the wound thoroughly.
  • Hydrogen peroxide helps in the removal of dirt which can lodge in the open boils and cause infection. Application of H2O2 causes this dirt removal and cleans the boil for early healing.
  • Do not use hydrogen peroxide frequently in single day as it may hamper in early healing of the boil.

  • Hydrogen peroxide is also used when there is any foreign body e.g. fly in ear, especially in children, who do not allow its removal and become irritable, hydrogen peroxide can be used in such cases or otherwise the child has to be sedated before removing the foreign particle.
  • Hydrogen peroxide makes the foreign particles removal easy and avoids the infection.
  • Hydrogen peroxide can also be used in cases of ear wax accumulation, only if the patient has an intact ear drum. Hydrogen peroxide can soften the wax but may cause ear drum pain and if patient has perforation of ear drum, bubbles of hydrogen peroxide may enter the middle ear and mastoid cavity and lead to mastoiditis.
