• Fever is present in both viral and bacterial meningitis. Fever is very high and is normally more than 102 degree.
• Headache: severe headache is another symptom prominent of meningitis.
• Vomiting is third symptom which a doctor looks for when he suspects meningitis.
• There is projectile vomiting. That means as soon as you eat, the food or drink is vomited.

Meningitis Rash Symptoms

There is a typical red or purple rash observed all over the body or on the lower legs, hands and neck of the person. The rash is just like a pin prick. In medical terms it is called petechial rash, or purpuric rash. Almost 50% of patients suffering from meningococcal meningitis present with purpuric rash.

They are caused due to leakage of blood from the tiny capillaries under the skin. They are also called hemorrhagic rash. When red spot or rashes are pressed, they do not fade or blanch. They remain even after pressing. There is no itching over the rash.

Many times the clinician can get confused by meningitis rash with that of another dreaded disease called dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Treatment For Meningitis Symptoms

• The patient requires complete bed rest. In severe form, the patient may require hospitalization.
• The patient may require careful nursing in a darkened room if he has photophobia.
• Due to fever and vomiting, the patient may become dehydrated. Let him drink as much water as possible.  Give orange juice, salt and sugar water etc frequently.
• The patient may require analgesic for headache and backache.
• Garlic is considered beneficial in treating symptoms of meningitis. Mix garlic juice extracted from two to three garlic cloves and add it to vegetable or fruit juice, let the patient drink this juice.
• Doctors start antibiotics, either oral antibiotics or in intravenous infusion.
• There is no particular treatment for meningitis rash. As the condition improves the red rash automatically recedes.
