Premature ventricular contractions (PVC) are also known as ventricular premature beats (VPB). They are extra and abnormal heart beats produced in either of the ventricle.  Ventricles are two lower heart chambers, from where the blood is pumped out of the heart.

These extra beat causes a disruption in the regular heart rhythm. With PVC you may feel a flip flop sensation in the chest. Isolated PVC are common, up to 50% of healthy adults have PVC in a 24 hour Holter recording.

By themselves, most patients do not need any treatment for PVC’s.

Why does this phenomenon occurs is not clear, but certain factors which are responsible for are;

• Changes in the body.
• Medications such as asthma medicines.
• Increased level of adrenaline in the body, caused by exercise, stress and caffeine.
• Alcohol.
• Injury to heart muscles caused during a heart attack.
• Congenital heart disease.
• High blood pressure.
• Myocarditis.

Premature Ventricular Contraction Treatment

PVC’s are not harmful. But if you have bothersome symptoms or underlying heart disease, you may need to take medicines.

• Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine as they trigger this condition.
• Reduce anxiety and stress.
• Try yoga and meditation.
• Beta blockers are used to suppress PVC.
• In some cases calcium channel blocker and anti arrhythmic drugs, are also used if the PVC is frequent.
