Amblyopia Strabismic Information:

It comes from the modern Latin word ‘œstrabos’ or from the Greek word ‘œstrabismus,’ which means squint, to squint, or squint-eyed. Patients who are amblyopia strabismic would have this condition wherein the eyes are not aligned properly with each other. In other words there is lack of coordination between the brain and the extraocular muscles and this prevents bringing the eyes’ stare on a particular point in space. This condition would also prevent binocular vision that eventually may affect its depth perception.

Other experts think that this is a disorder of the brain wherein it lacks coordination with the eyes. It may be that the nerves directing the eye muscles are defective. Others say that this is purely an eye problem in relation to their binocular vision and depth perception. But on more serious amblyopia strabismic conditions, this condition is treated and co-managed both by the orthoptists and opthalmologists.

During the eye examination, the orthoptist, optometrist, and the ophthalmologist would do the cover test. Doctors would usually let the child look at a thing while covering the other eye. By doing this, it allows the doctors to determine which of the eye squints, and how much it squints. The doctors will also be able to tell under what circumstances the abnormal turn of the eye would occur. After this test, the doctors would be able to find out the direction where the amblyopia strabismic eye deviates.

Hirschberg Test for Strabismic Amblyopia:

The Hirschberg test is used to assess whether one person is suffering from strabismic amblyopia. It is particularly used in the field of ophthalmology and optometry and is a screening test that evaluates whether there is ocular misalignment. In doing this test, a light is shone in the person’s eyes while the doctors observe where the light will reflect off the cornea, that is why this is also called the Hirschberg corneal reflex test. Normally, the light lands on the center of the cornea. But abnormal results would show the light reflecting on different spots of each eye which means that the eyes are not properly aligned, hence, the presence of strabismus.
