Brain Injury Recovery - Supplements and Remedies

Brain Injury Recovery - Supplements and Remedies
What Is Brain Damage?

A widely expansive disorder, nearly 1.5 million people in the United States experience some form of brain injury every year. In addition, roughly 5.3 million people suffer from the results of prior brain damage. By definition, brain damage is any injury that causes the damage or deterioration of the cells in the brain. Typically characterized in two categories, brain damage arises from several different causes and exhibits various symptoms.

The two types of brain injury are traumatic brain injury (TBI) and acquired brain injury (ABI). Traumatic brain injury is the result of an external force such as a hard blow to the head or face. This blow causes the brain to shift inside of the skull or damages the skull itself, harming the brain. Acquired brain injury is the result of a cellular condition. Typically arising from a tumor, ABI is commonly associated with pressure on the brain and may be the result of other neurological conditions such as a stroke. In both types the brain injury requires after birth.

The symptoms of brain damage can vary widely. Mild injury typically involves loss of consciousness for a short period, memory or concentration problems, headache, nausea, sensory issues, and fatigue. Moderate to severe brain injury often causes extended loss of consciousness, profound confusion, agitation, slurred speech, loss of coordination, persistent headache, seizures, dilation of one or both pupils, and clear fluids draining from the nose or ears.

Natural Methods to Promote Brain Injury Recovery

Depending on the severity of the damage, brain injury recovery may be very slow and require several different treatment pathways. Holistic methods of treatment that are particularly effective include developmental movement therapy and changing the diet. Supplements that have been shown to improve brain functioning and promote recovery include grape seed extract, serrapeptase, amino acids, melatonin, magnesium, l-glutamine, and vitamin B complex. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment may also help stimulate the recovery process.
