Calcium Citrate Supplement

Calcium Citrate Supplement
The role of calcium in the body, more particularly the health of the bones, is indubitable. Depending on the age and gender of an individual, an average adult needs a daily intake of 1000mg-1300mg of calcium daily. On a single serving of dairy products, one derives around 300mg of calcium, hence the need for calcium supplements that make up for the remaining requirement of calcium.

Calcium, once consumed, is absorbed in the small intestines, although not all of the calcium consumed is absorbed in the body, as it is depended on a number of factors such as the level of vitamin D, level of estrogen, acidic condition of the small intestines, and the type of calcium supplement. Naturally, calcium exists only in combination with other compounds, hence the different types of calcium supplements i.e. calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, and calcium nitrate.

Solgar and Citracal are good examples of Calcium citrate supplements. As mentioned, calcium is absorbed well in an acidic environment, making calcium citrate the best absorbed supplemental form of calcium. Note however that it does not need any special stomach acid for its maximum absorption, explaining the reason why it can be taken any time of day or night even on an empty stomach.

Of equal importance to note however is that calcium citrate supplement normally gives less elemental calcium per pill, hence one should expect to take a number of pills through out the day depending on the calcium needs one may have. A word of caution though is that individuals who know they have acid reflux may not be capable of tolerating calcium citrate supplements hence may consider other forms of calcium supplements.

Calcium citrate supplement greatly helps in boosting the good health of bones and teeth as well as helping in muscle contractions, particularly to the heart which has to contract countless times in any given day. These supplements equally help promote normal blood clotting activities. Stimulating healthy secretion of hormones and conducting nerve impulses are other functions of calcium citrate supplement in the body.

Even when using calcium citrate supplements, some people may not reap the full benefits due to their lifestyle. For example, taking of alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and drinks with phosphates promotes rapid loss of calcium hence worsens the situation. As such, even as you take your calcium citrate supplement, it is always good to change your lifestyle so that the supplement can perform to the best of its ability and provide you with all the numerous benefits that your body needs.
