Leg muscle pain can be excruciating at times and can be caused by many different things. The causes can range from over exertion to minor injuries to something even more severe like tendonitis.



Sports activities can lead to leg muscle pain in athletes because of the repetition of leg movement that is involved in what they do every day. Over extension and over use of the legs cause damage to the joints and ligaments, as well as the muscles. Dislocation of the kneecap is common in athletes which can cause the other muscles to work harder. This can add to the leg muscle pain that is experienced.



Exercise is good for the muscles, however, an unusual amount of exercise or beginning a new exercise routine can give you leg muscle pain, too. Whenever you begin a new exercise workout you should be sure that you stretch and condition your muscles beforehand. Doing some warm ups at the beginning of your exercise routine can also prevent some possible leg muscle pain.



Crouching and kneeling frequently is another reason that you may have leg muscle pain, as well as back and hip pain. Sometimes when you have to stand or walk a lot during the day in a repetitive fashion the muscles will begin to feel overworked. Almost everyone will have leg muscle pain every once in a while and some will have worse symptoms than others. Strained muscles and sprains can be alleviated in several ways and can give some relief from the pain.



Treatments for leg muscle pain can be found in various forms. Pain relievers, like ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen, can help lessen the pain and these can be purchased without a prescription. Over the counter medications for muscle strains can also be very helpful. There are tubes of muscle ointment that can be rubbed onto the area of the leg muscle pain for relief. They are pretty fast acting, too, so you won’t have to suffer through pain for long. Ice packs and heating pads are also good suggestions for relaxing the muscles and taking down any swelling that may be present.
