Bad Heartburn Symptoms
- Heavy or sharp burning sensation in the chest. The sensation normally starts behind the sternum or the breastbone or in the ribcage area and can extend up to the throat. The sensation occurs a few seconds after eating and can last for a few minutes or for a couple of hours.
- Burning sensations in the throat. This can be felt in the upper portion of the neck which may sometimes be felts in the lower area. The symptom will get worse when a patient swallows. It is generally caused by irritation of the throat which is brought about by stomach acids that are being brought up or refluxed into the throat.
- Bitter or sour taste in the mouth. This happens when contents of the stomach reflux back into the esophagus and enter the back of the throat.
- Difficulties in swallowing or dysphagia. Patients will feel that there are food particles that are stuck in the throat, chest pressure, and a choking feeling after eating. This happens when food will not go to the right passageways.
- Constant coughs. This is brought about by stomach acid reflux.
- Asthma-like symptoms like wheezing. Heartburn causes stomach acid to be aspirated into the lungs and other air passages which can lead to breathing difficulties, coughing, and wheezing.
- Pain in the chest that sometimes extends to the neck, shoulders, and rams. The pain will often be experienced after eating, when a patient experiences anxiety, during exercise, and when lying down.
