What is Mydriasis?


This is a disorder where the eye pupil is widened or dilated for unusually long period of time and does not return to its normal state for a long period also. There may be a number of causes for this; the more frequent ones include the use of some drugs as well as trauma to the eye.








Mydriasis Symptoms


Symptoms often associated with this condition include:



  • Blurred vision

  • Conjunctivitis

  • Irritation of the eyes

  • Dry eyes

  • Nystagmus

  • Photophobia

  • Ocular hypertension

  • Poor vision

  • Red eyes

  • Early stages of cataract

  • Dizziness

  • Glare

  • Glaucoma

  • Insomnia

  • Night sweats

  • Pain in lower back

  • Retinitis

  • Weakness of lower back

  • Red-tipped tongue – may be trembling

  • Rapid-empty pulse


Mydriasis Causes


The causes for this condition include:

  • Carotid artery aneurysm

  • Adie’s syndrome

  • Botulism

  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma

  • Brain death

  • Ocular surgery

  • Raised intracranial pressure

  • Serotonin syndrome

  • Cerebral oedema

  • Lysergic acid diethylamide

  • Dopram injections

It is also suggested to use protection for the eye until this problem is evaluated and treated – the sooner the better. Treatment received in a timely manner goes a very long way in managing or curing Mydriasis. This condition is usually temporary, but can become permanent because of treatment that is improper or often plain ignorance. It may be caused by an underlying health problem and the outcome of treatment is largely dependent on the health condition itself.


Usually the individual with this condition does not experience any pain, although discomfort persists until the condition is cured.
