Penile Yeast Infection Men will commonly have penile infection caused by fungus by name Candida albicans. Each person will have millions of yeast naturally in the body but not all of them will create problem or infection. Yeast creates infection only if exceeds in number and grows rapidly. Candida thrives in moist and dark places like armpits, groin and male genitals. It can also develop on fingernails and areas that have folds of skin. Yeast not only affects genitals but also your mouth and armpits.
Symptoms :
There will be intense itching and irritation along with discomfort. Some men will have pain during intercourse. It will form red bumps or rashes on the penis making it swollen. The foreskin on the top of penis will get affected and there will be development of inflammation. Many of them will have burning sensation while urinating and during sexual activity.
There are men who do not have any symptoms at all when penis gets infected. It would turn the head or tip of the penis swollen and reddish. Those who have symptoms will have signs like that of genital herpes.
Causes :
Very often sexual intercourse is the major cause for men getting yeast infection. If a man have sexual activity with a woman with Candida he is likely to get that infection from her. Hence it is wise to have sex with known partners and that too follow safe sex pattern. In case you have infection it is better to stay away from sex until the infection gets completely cured. If you still have idea of having sex with infection, then you are likely to transmit the infection to your partner.
Prolonged use of antibiotics can cause penile yeast infection. Many of us would be advised to take strong antibiotics for cold and other health issues and this may cause infection. The antibiotics will fight with the good yeast and destroy them giving space for bad yeast which multiples causing infection.
If you are diabetic then there is increased chance of getting yeast infection. Presence of sugar in the urine will obviously invite yeast to develop and multiply in the genitals.
Treatment :
Candid albicans can be treated with antifungal medications like clotrimazole and fluconazole. It is wise to apply topical ointments that contain nystatin or fluconazole on the affected area. Normally 150mg of tablet is given orally for destroying yeast infection in the genitals. But you may be asked to repeat the course if it does not respond to the drug.
You can use Monistat over the counter medicine for treating yeast infection in penis.
Penile yeast infection can be treated by self care and homemade remedies. Apply yogurt on the affected area and leave it overnight. You can find lot of difference in the morning and all your inflammation would have gone.
Prevention :
You need to play safe sex and avoid having sex with multiple partners. By taking little extra care in cleaning your genitals you can avoid yeast infection, even before they start. Eat healthy foods and do regular exercise and sleep well to eliminate stress in your life.
All these diseases have early symptoms are expressed in a form that can recognize, find out the causes of the disease is the best way to get effective treatment and prevention best

Blepharitis
Blepharitis The term blepharitis indicates eyelids inflammation medically. The areas where the hair follicles of the eyelids are located develop swelling due to the malfunction in the oil glands of the eyelids. “Blepharos” means eyelid in Greek and hence inflammation developed on the eyelids is called blepharitis. During the process of inflammation, normally white blood cells are produced in excess to protect the body from foreign particles as a result of injury or infection. This results in inflammation which may cause warmth, redness, pain and swelling. The eyes become irritated and itchy with the formation of scales or dandruff on the eyelash. However blepharitis does not spread from one person to another.
Causes :
The major cause of eyelid inflammation is due to the excess of secretion from oil glands present in the eyelids. You can find about 40 oil glands totally in upper and lower eyelids and due to malfunction, they started secreting more of oily substance which in turn affect the margins of eyelids casing irritation and swelling.
It is also caused due acne rosacea which is one of the common skin disorder affecting millions of people. Sometimes the outer edges are affected or the skin surrounding the corners of the eyelids gets affected with the oil secretion.
Any disorder or malfunction of the eyelid margin may also cause blepharitis. Seborrheic blepharitis is the term given when the eyelids get infected by bacteria Staphylococcus.
Allergic reaction can also cause blepharitis. Change in eye-cosmetics is also another reason for swelling of eyelids. Contact lens and new type of mascara can also cause this condition. Sometimes airborne allergy, environmental pollution, pet allergies and spray can also cause blepharitis. Underlying medical illness like skin cancer may also produce inflammation on the eyelids. People who get repeated sty infection and chalazia may also suffer from blepharitis.
Symptoms :
The affected eyelids become reddish and there may be moderate to severe irritation. Dandruff like scales is found to stick on the eyelashes which may cause burning sensation. The entire eyelids may become reddened and look swollen.
In simple terms, the affected person will feel like having sand particles inside the eyes and it becomes difficult to close and open the eyes. It may also cause scarring of eyelids and eyelashes may fell out. It may produce gritty sensation on the eyes causing crusting of eyelids. The affected eye becomes sensitive to light. It can also cause dryness of the eyes due to mild form of tearing.
The margins of the eyelids become red and swollen. There will be increased shedding of cells of skin near the eyelids which may cause flaking. For many people, it becomes difficult to open the eyes in the morning since eyelids stick together to close the eyes. It can produce tears (frothy) repeatedly. For some there may be partial loss of eyelashes.

Treatment :
For most of the cases, it does not require any medical treatment. Simple cleaning of the eyes, using warm compress, and frequent removal of scalp will control the eye infection. Taking good care of the eyes and regular cleaning habits is enough to manage blepharitis.
Apply warm compress on the eyelids periodically. You can dip a soft cloth in warm water and apply it gently on the eyelids. Leave it aside for 5-10 minutes and repeat this process several times a day. You can also use the cotton applicator for cleansing the eyelids.
Avoid using all sorts of eye makeup and cosmetics when you get infection. In case you are wearing contact lenses, you need to remove it temporarily till the infection cures completely.
In case you still have symptoms of blepharitis you can consult your doctor to use antibiotic eye lotions or steroid drops.

Influenza
Influenza Influenza is a common virus that causes respiratory tract infection. Commonly called as Flu, this infection is seasonal and highly contagious. Influenza virus keeps on changing strains causing new symptoms frequently. Some of the symptoms of influenza are fever, dry cough, nasal congestion and fatigue. Flu can be prevented by vaccination. In severe cases, flu can cause life threatening complications and even death. The new flu virus (swine flu) named H1N1 developed in Mexico in April 2009, killing several hundreds of people all over the world. World Health Organization has declared this virus as pandemic.
Epidemic and Pandemic :
Flu viruses have cause serious outbreaks during season affecting millions of people in addition to birds and animals. When such a sudden outbreak occurs, the affected population will develop weakened immunity spreading quickly. Such outbreaks are called epidemics.
When such an outbreak affects human population worldwide it is called as pandemics. The virus is so contagious that it spreads through air easily affecting millions of people every second. The virus is smart enough to develop new strains gaining more power every day thus not responding to any vaccine. It was the Spanish flu that occurred in 1918 causing several million deaths over the world and later it was Swine flu in 2009 which was a pandemic.
Who are at risk?
Influenza virus can attack anyone with weak immunity like older adults, infants, young children, and pregnant women. You have increased risk of developing flu infection if your workplace involves close contact with people, if your immunity is tampered due to any reason, or if you have developed any chronic diseases like asthma or diabetes.
Symptoms :
The symptom of flu begins with common cold, runny nose, and mild fever. But within couple of days it will produce serious symptoms like high fever, severe muscle ache on your back and arms, headache, chills, dry cough and sore throat. It attacks respiratory tract infecting your lungs from mild to severely. Some viruses can cause stomach infection leading to vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. If you have any of the above symptoms, then you need to take antiviral medications right away to prevent any complications.
Causes :
Influenza viruses can spread through air droplets like coughing, sneezing or even talking. The virus can stick on to any objects and get transferred into your body if you accidentally touch your eyes or nose or mouth after touching these objects. People affected with influenza virus will have the required antibodies for fighting any new infection.
But the flu virus may develop new strains by mutation gaining more strength. You can always prevent the infection by getting vaccinated. Influenza viruses have several subtypes and strains that occur in different combinations. In individuals who have weakened immunity like infants, older adults or asthma patients the virus will repeatedly affect them making them more susceptible for bacterial infections also causing pneumonia.
Complications :
In severe cases, influenza virus can cause bronchitis, pneumonia, eyes and ear infections. In some cases due to complicated respiratory tract infection it can cause death.
Diagnoses :
Your doctor will check for the above symptoms for detecting the presence of virus. He may collect throat swab to the laboratory for confirming the diagnoses. Tests are available for differentiating influenza A and B types. Now technology has improved to detect H1N1 flu virus in few hours of testing so that vaccination can be given immediately.
Treatment :
Healthy individuals may not require vigorous treatment for flu and often the symptoms will disappear in few days. But there is nothing wrong in taking antiviral drugs like Tamiflu or Relenza if the virus is seasonal in your area affecting many individuals. Tamiflu is an oral medication taken with water. Zanamivir is another antiviral drug that can be inhaled by a device or inhaler. But people with any type of heart/lung/respiratory disease should not take this medication.
Home Remedies :
If you suspect flu symptoms for any of your loved ones, you need to make them drink plenty of liquids like juice or warm soup. Take plenty of rest and avoid mingling with people until the symptoms have totally vanished. Over the counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can be taken to get relief from fever and body pain. As per the recommendations of the CDC (Center for disease control/prevention) every American citizen who are above 6 months of age, should get vaccinated for flu.
Prevention :
You can prevent getting influenza infection by getting vaccinated. Wash your hands for at least 10 seconds before taking food. Alternatively you can use hand sanitizers (alcohol based) to prevent spread of infection. Cover your nose/mouth while sneezing or coughing. Avoid mixing with crowd (particularly during flu season) to reduce the chance of getting flu infection.
When to see a doctor?
You should get in touch with emergency department if you have:
• Trouble in breathing/palpitation or fast breathing
• Change of skin color (blue or grayish)
• Severe vomiting or diarrhea (not controlled by OTC medications)
• Fatigue with high fever and nasal congestion
• Confusion, dizziness
• Sudden pain in the chest

Norovirus
Norovirus Norovirus is a severe viral infection disturbing the balance of gastro intestine. Individuals affected with norovirus will develop sudden vomiting/diarrhea with abdominal cramps. The symptoms would last for few days and the person will recover automatically without taking any treatment. However noroviruses can infect severely on infants and young children leading to dehydration.
This viral infection is contagious spreading quickly from infected food/water and by close contact with infected person. Norovirus is caused by group of viruses which would affect the soft lining of the stomach causing inflammation. This viral infection originated in Norwalk, Ohio and hence the name Norovirus.
Causes :
Eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water is the main reason for getting norovirus infection. Consuming raw meat/uncooked or undercooked oysters can lead to diarrhea and stomach pain. The virus would have infected the food item and by consuming the food unknowingly you are infested with virus. You may get this infection even by simply touching the objects that are exposed to viruses and touching your nose or eyes with the same finger.
Norovirus spreads quickly and can easily pass from one person to another in social setups like day care, nursing home, clinic and close quarters. These viruses can live in any temperature and on any surface and hence it is passed on to others by sharing the utensils. Suppose a man employed in a hotel is infected with norovirus he may spread the virus to any number of people by simply touching the food products before serving it. Some of the food products through which this virus spreads include salads (freshly cut vegetables), oysters and raspberries.
Symptoms :
Some of the signs of norovirus infection are nausea, vomiting, passing watery stool, abdominal cramps, dehydration, loss of weight and low grade fever. Incubation period for norovirus is roughly a day or two and shortly after exposure it will cause diarrhea. The virus is usually excreted through feces and the symptoms will last for 2-3 days after the exit of virus. Some people may develop body pain and muscle pain due to loss of nutrients.
Risk Factors :
People with weakened immunity and having vulnerable diseases like AIDS, people living in unsanitary environments and working in food processing centers, people who are frequently traveling and staying in new hotels and resorts and those employed in day care and nursing homes are likely to develop norovirus. Often, this infection will clear off within few days but in rare cases, it can cause dehydration and malnutrition.
Diagnoses :
Norovirus infection can be diagnosed easily by the above symptoms or by checking the stool sample.
Treatment :
Antibiotics are not useful in managing the symptoms of norovirus since it is not caused by bacteria. In healthy individuals, the symptoms will fade within few days without any treatment but for some people antiviral medications are given. Even without taking any drugs you can manage vomiting and diarrhea by simply drinking lot of fluids and restoring lost balance of ions. You can take plenty of fresh fruit juices and electrolytes. Avoid taking coffee/tea or alcohol since it may worsen the symptoms. Over the counter hydration drinks like Pedialyte can be given if you suspect norovirus infection for your child.
Prevention :
Norovirus infection being contagious can spread quickly and hence you need to be cautious and hygienic. For those who are working with lot of people like nursing home and in social setups following healthy habits is absolutely necessary to prevent this infection. You should wash the hands for 10 seconds (minimum) before eating. In case that is not possible you can use hand sanitizer after using the toilet or changing diapers. Do not eat undercooked or raw foods.
If you have already developed norovirus infection you need to take leave from cooking since you are likely to spread the infection to others by handling food substances. Using bleaching agents that contain chlorine is recommended on contaminated surface/areas to prevent this infection.

Sinus Infection
Sinus Infection Sinus is a small cavity present within the underlying tissue or bone. They are common found on the nasal cavities and on the bones of the face. When these areas of tissue develop infection caused by virus or bacteria it leads to sinus infection. Sinus is also found on various other organs like heart, under the eyes and on the forehead. Sinus infection is not contagious and is caused by bacteria or virus and other pathogens. It causes swelling of concerned tissue which leads to abnormal mucus discharge.
The air cavities of the nose develop inflammation leading to cough and sneezing. Many times sinus infection develops due to allergic reactions. Antibiotics are given if the sinusitis is caused by bacterium. Acute sinus is caused often due to common cold. Chronic sinusitis can cause complications extending for many weeks.
Symptoms :
Persistent cough, mucus discharge from the nose or throat, congestion in the nasal cavities, sore throat, pain and tenderness in the areas around the eyes and forehead and decreased sense of smell and taste are some of the signs of sinus infection. For many children/adults, cough gets worse during night. In addition there may be fever, headache and body pain. The phlegm produced will be greenish yellow in color with foul smell during sinus infection.
Additional pressure is applied on the sinus tissues which may cause headache for some people. The same pressure can cause itching of eyes, ear pain and bad breath. In case of rare fungal infection it may cause ulcers on the oral cavity and on the nasal region.
Causes :
There is swelling of thin lining of mucous membranes of the nose when sinus infection develops. This additional swelling will not let out the mucus which was previously discharged normally from the nostrils. Sinus infection is caused by viral infection, bacterial or fungal infection. If the symptoms mentioned above continue for more than a week then it is likely to be of bacterial infection.
When the body’s immunity gets weakened for other reasons it can cause fungal infection. Nasal polyps or tumors in the nasal passage, hay fever, allergic fever and tooth infection can cause sinusitis. Certain medical disorders like GERD (a reflux disease), cystic fibrosis and disorders in the body’s immune system can induce sinusitis. Common cold, exposure to allergies like dust or smoke, cigarette smoke can block the nasal passage leading to sinus infection.
Types :
Sinus infection is classified according to the time span the disease takes. Acute sinusitis is one which exists for few days or weeks whereas chronic sinusitis may continue for months together causing nasal blockage and runny nose.
Risk Factors :
You are likely to develop sinus infection when you are exposed to allergic smoke, chemicals, dust, or grains. Any deviation in the nasal septum or development of nasal tumors or polyps can cause sinus infection. People who are habitually smoking are more likely to develop sinusitis than others. In rare cases, sinus infection may develop into asthma attack, if left untreated for several weeks. If the infectious bacteria or virus spreads to the bloodstream it may reach the brain causing meningitis. In rare cases, the infection can severely damage the eye socket leading to loss of vision.
Diagnoses :
Your doctor will physically examine the body looking more particularly on your nose and throat. He will examine the nasal passage to check for any inflammation or development of any polyps inside. He may recommend a nasal endoscopy to inspect the nasal passage clearly. For severe cases, CT or MRI scan is done for ruling out any abnormalities inside.
Treatment :
Often acute type of sinus infection do not require any treatment if it is caused by common cold. You can try home remedies to get relief from symptoms. You can use decongestants in the form of tablets or nasal sprays for managing most of the symptoms of acute sinusitis. Your doctor may prescribe saline nasal spray to clear off the nasal blockage. Corticosteroid medications like Flonase, Nasonex, Budesonide, Nasacort and Beconase are largely prescribed for treating inflammation.
In case of fatigue or fever you can use aspirin or Tylenol for getting relief from pain. But it is not recommended for children. Avoid taking antibiotics since sinus infection is caused by virus. Unless it is bacterial infection antibiotics should not be used. For severe bacterial infection medications like Amoxil, doxycycline or Monodox are prescribed. Once your doctor gives you antibiotics ensure that you are completing the course of the medication. If you stop them after getting relief from symptoms, it can come back within few days.
If the sinusitis is caused by fungal infection, your doctor may prescribe antifungal drugs. If the root cause is weakened immunity then you will be put on immunotherapy. Chronic sinus infection can be treated by taking long course of drugs like Augmentin. In severe cases, surgery is done for clearing/opening the blocked sinus tissues.
Home Remedies :
Most of the symptoms of acute sinusitis can be managed by simple home remedies. You need to drink plenty of water/fluids to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid taking coffee/tea/alcohol since it may worsen the symptoms. Take complete rest to help the body fight against infections which would speed-up the process of recovery.
Warm compression can be applied on the entire face to loosen the blocked sinuses. Try using neti pot or other rinsing methods for clearing off the sinuses. It may be difficult for you to breathe normally while having sinus infection. Hence keep your head elevated position by adding more pillows.
Prevention :
You cannot prevent sinus infection but you can avoid allergy causing environment. No vaccine has been developed against sinusitis. Cigarette smoke in any form can gradually damage the tissues of the lungs blocking nasal passage. So, avoid active/passive smoking. Allergy may be the real culprit of sinus infection and hence you need to get tested for allergic infection and treat the same. Treating the underlying problem is vital to prevent getting chronic sinusitis.

Pain behind Knee – Causes and Treatment
Pain behind Knee – Causes and Treatment
Meniscus pain
The meniscus is also a major cause of pain that is behind the knee. The meniscus is responsible for the absorption of the shock in the knee joint and also prevents the knee from twisting too far. If the knee clicks or hurts when you move your leg quickly or when you do fast turns, then you can have a meniscus problem that is causing the pain behind the knee. This is a frequent problem with individuals who do high impact sports such as soccer, basketball and football due to quickly running and turning at high speeds.
Popliteus pain
The popliteus is the muscle behind the knee that supports the knee joint from the back. It is a muscle that aids the knee holding together. If an individual has knee pain that occurs at the back, this is one probable cause of the knee pain. This muscle can become injured by getting squashed or strained in between other muscles like the hamstrings as well as the calves.
Arthritis of the knee
The majority of pain comes from the arthritic knee joint which is usually caused by wear and tear of the knee joint. When the knee joint becomes worn out, the knee can go into spasms of the muscle as well as inflammation. The pain is much worse when the individual puts all or most of the weight of the body on to the knee by activities such as bending down or standing on one leg – for example when going up stairs. If you do have that type of pain, then the likely cause of pain behind the knee is arthritis of the knee.
