Red bumps on Baby’s Face

Red bumps on Baby’s Face
Red bumps on baby’s face can be because of baby acne which is most common in the very first month of birth. Baby acne are because of the baby’s exposure to mother’s hormones during pregnancy. Usually this condition does not require any treatment as acne heal up on its own within few weeks.

Baby acne is very common in new born babies. Actually acne is present at the time of birth but they show up only after few weeks of birth. Baby acne looks much similar to teenage acne. In simple words, baby acne is characterized by red bumps or pimples which are usually surrounded by reddish skin.

Acne appear on cheeks, chin, forehead and sometimes also at the back. Red bumps are more common among hot or fuzzy babies or their skin is irritated by split-up milk, saliva and if the baby’s face is exposed to a rough or dirty fabric. Generally baby boy are more vulnerable to red bumps or baby acne than baby girl.

If the baby has developed acne, then wash his face with a mild soap twice a day. However if the acne does not seem to improve within a month’s time then you should immediately take your baby to the doctor.

Sometimes people mistake milia and acne. The biggest difference between the two is that in milia white bumps appear on the baby’s skin while in acne they are red in colour. Milia is nowhere related to acne and disappear within few days. In another scenario, if red rash occur on body part other than face then this can be some other disease such as eczema, heat rash and cradle cap.

Causes

Experts say that baby acne is associated with the maternal hormones which baby receives at the time of birth. But researchers have continued to experiment to explore reason of baby acne and have always concluded the same fact that baby acne is because of maternal hormones which baby gets at the time of birth.

Baby acne can become worse if baby takes certain medications or pregnant mother is given certain medications at the time of nursing. Baby acne can also occur if baby’s skin reacts to certain skin products specifically the oily products. Sometimes soap used for baby might be the problem. Discontinue use of same soap for some time and look for some results. If acne seems to reduce then it might be the soap that is posing problem.

How long does baby acne last?

In most of the cases, baby acne disappears within few moths but sometimes they linger on for several months. But if red bumps on baby face do not go away in three months, take baby to the doctor. The doctor may prescribe certain mild topical medications if acne become severe or do not disappear within a month or two.

If the acne is long lasting then it could be a sign that the child will most likely develop acne in his teenage.

How to prevent red bumps

Baby acne should not be treated like teenage or adolescent acne. There are some points that should be kept in mind to avoid red bumps on baby face:

  • Refrain from giving over-the-counter medications to the baby even if medication is mild.

  • Do not wash baby’s face much because red bumps on baby face are not due to dirt and too much washing might irritate baby’s skin.

  • If the baby skin is sensitive or has red bumps then avoid using oily product. Use of oily product triggers the formation of red bumps. On the contrary some parents have reported that use of oils or certain creams have reduced red bumps. If so, then monitor baby’s skin and if acne worsens stop using immediately else contact the baby’s doctor to know which product will best suit your baby.

  • Wash baby’s face just once or twice a day with a mild soap and normal water. Avoid using cloth on baby’s face as it may worsen baby acne.

  • Do not try to pick or pinch red bumps because baby skin is very soft and doing this will prove to be more harmful that imagined.

  • It is important to keep the baby skin clean and dry until red bumps disappear.

  • As a general point, it is important to have patience. This is because red bumps do not go away within a day. It might take a week or months for red bumps to heal up.

If your baby has developed red bumps on the face, do not panic. It is a common condition which should not be much worried about. Baby acne is a harmless skin condition and baby from infancy to 6 months are most likely to develop this condition. Keep in mind the points listed above and follow them patiently. You can always go to the baby’s doctor to treat red bumps on your baby’s face.

Leprosy – Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, Cure, Images

Leprosy – Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, Cure, Images
Leprosy is an infectious disease in which inflammation of skin takes place along with deformity of limbs. Leprosy is caused due to infestation of mycobacterium leprae and mycobacterium lepromatosis in human body. It is also called Hansens Disease or HD, named after Norwegian physician Gerhard Armauer Hansen, who is known to discover bacteria, responsible for outbreak of leprosy. Leprosy is principally a disease related to peripheral nerves and mucosa (upper respiratory tract). If a person has leprosy, skin abrasions for prolonged period for time; is one of the physical symptoms of leprosy. If leprosy is not treated timely and properly it causes permanent damage to skin, limbs, eyes and various nerves of human body. Due to infection of bacteria; limbs become numb as our body’s defence mechanism is targeted towards bacteria and other infections are left unattended. Because of the very same reason fingers and toes of both hands and legs gets mutilated and abbreviated as tendons are engrossed into the human body.

Leprosy is a common disease in densely populated countries like India and China. In the year 1995, World Health Organization (WHO) surveyed countries and found that nearly 3.5 million people were permanently disabled due to leprosy and it was since then World Health Organization started taking appropriate measures for eradication of leprosy. As a result nearly 60 million people worldwide have been successfully treated for leprosy. Let us find various symptoms which help us to identify infestation of leprosy causing bacteria, diagnosis and treatment methodologies used.

http://www.Symptoms-Causes-treatment.blogspot.com detect diseases at an early stage symptoms, and find out the causes and treatments best suited.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

Leprosy is one the diseases which has large incubation period. It means if one is infected by leprosy causing bacteria, symptoms of leprosy would be visible after many years of infection (up to 19-21years). Infestation of bacteria largely affects the peripheral nerves (nerves outside brain and spinal cord) and the skin.  Main symptoms of leprosy are:

  • Disfiguring skin sores of pale yellow color

  • Skin lumps or bumps

  • Weakened muscles

  • Loss of sensation in arms and legs

  • Dryness of eyes

If above mentioned symptoms are not addressed on time facial disfigurement and mutilation of fingers starts to develop with time.

Treatment & Preventive measures

Leprosy is treated by prescribing combination of drugs. This type of treatment where several drugs are used for treatment of single disease is called Multi Drug Therapy or MDT. These drugs should not be administered individually to the patient also known as monotherapy. Technique of MDT was introduced as an effective way to treat leprosy because patients showed signs of resistant to dapsone, which was earlier considered an effective antibiotic against mycobacterium leprae. Various combinations of drug including dapsone, rifampicin, clofazimine, minocycline and ofloxacin are used to cure different types of leprosy e.g. combination of rifampicin and dapsone is used for treatment of paucibacillary leprosy, combination of dapsone, clofazimine and rifampicin is used for treatment of multibacillary leprosy. World health organization (WHO) has formulated below mentioned standard treatment tenure for curing leprosy

Type of Leprosy

Durations of Treatment

Dosage

Paucibacillary (PB) Leprosy

180 days

100mg Dapsone with 600mg Rifampicin

Multibacillary (MB) Leprosy

365 days

100mg Dapsone with 600mg Rifampicin and 300mg Clofazimine

Single Lesion Paucibacillary (SLPB) Leprosy

60 days

600mg Rifampicin with 400mg Ofloxacin and 100mg Minocycline

Alongside above prescription Aspirin, prednisone, or thalidomide is also used to control inflammation. During the period 1994-2000, World Health Organization distributed MDT free of charge to countries where leprosy was declared endemic.

Apart from bacteria, poor hygiene conditions and malnutrition are also considered main reasons for outbreak of leprosy.

During treatment of leprosy, patient should maintain proper hygiene and take good care of infected areas. For skin lesions and dryness, patient should wash his hands and legs properly with soap and apply Vaseline or prescribed ointment. Same precautions should be taken in case of ulceration, however, there is no need to apply petroleum jelly. Patient, after washing ulcer affected skin, should cover it with a clean and sterile bandage.

Myths about leprosy –Is it contagious?

There are various myths about leprosy across the world. In various parts of India, where leprosy was endemic, people suffering from leprosy were considered as untouchables. They were deprived of social respect and often restricted from social gatherings. Main cause of such stigma was lack of awareness around leprosy and how it is caused. People thought leprosy was a contagious disease and would get affected if they interact with a person suffering from it. Later due to combined efforts of World Health Organization and Government bodies, various awareness programmes were introduced along with free MDT kits available at government hospitals. Since then leprosy is no more considered to be a contagious disease. People suffering from leprosy need care, treatment and attention in the same way as other patients do and the same was educated to people.

With improving living conditions and appropriate knowledge and awareness about leprosy, people suffering from this disease have decreased by many folds. A person suffering from leprosy can lead a normal healthy life after treatment. He is no different from other people except he had a disease and bravely fought against it to be victorious.

Graves Disease – Pictures, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Graves Disease – Pictures, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment
Graves’ disease is an immune system disorder characterized by excess production of thyroid hormones or hyperthyroidism.Generally, the functioning of the various body systems is controlled by the thyroid hormones, so the signs and symptoms of this disease differat times and affects the entire health. Graves’ disease is not life-threatening and mostly affects thefemales whose age isless than forty. However, treatments will lessen the symptoms and thyroid levels.

  • Symptoms of Graves’ disease

Some of the symptoms of Graves’ disease are as follows:

    • Enlargement of thyroid gland

    • Excess exhaustion or weariness

    • Petulance

    • Irregular or fast heartbeat

    • Anxieties

    • Abnormal sleep habits

    • Sudden loss of weight

    • Increase in perspiration

    • Irritable bowel habits

    • Diarrhea

    • Increase in sensitivity to heat

    • Lessened libido

    • Changes in menstrual cycle

    • Hands or fingers can develop fine quiver

    Graves’ dermopathy
It is an uncommon type of Graves’ disease and its symptoms are:

    • Increased thickness of the skin

    • Redness of the skin, mostly over the feet

    Graves’ ophthalmopathy
A person suffering from Graves’ disease is also likely to suffer from another disorder known as ‘Graves’ opthalmopathy. It affects around 50% of the patients and also causes inflammation of tissues and muscles close to eyes. It may lead to some malfunctioning of the immune system as well. Some of its signs and symptoms are:

    • Double vision

    • Puffed up eyes

    • Dry eyes, irritability

    • Swollen eyes

    • Excess tearing of eyes

    • Pain in eyes

    • In rare cases, blurred or diminished eyesight or corneal ulcers

    • Inflammation of eyes

    • Redness of eyes

    • Fixed stare, no free eye movements

    • Sensitivity to light

Various complications come up with Graves’ disease like weakening of bones, cardiac defects, problems during pregnancy, and thyroid storms.

    Causes of Graves’ disease

Some of the causes of Graves’ disease are:

    • The immune system creates antibodies to fight bacteria, germs and microorganisms, thereby guardingour health. Malfunctioning of the immune system causes Graves’ disease. When a person suffers from this disease, the immune system produces another antibody known as ‘thyrotropin receptor antibody or TRAb’. This antibody counteracts the effects of a protein found in cells of the thyroid gland. However, the real cause for malfunctioning of the immune system is not known.

    • This disease affects the patient’s health adversely. It is because the thyroid hormones control various functions of body like body temperature, cardiac system, muscle strength, the metabolic process, menstruation process, and the nervous system.

    • Causes for Graves’ ophthalmopathy

    •  The real reason is not known; however, research shows that the TRAb antibody gets attached to the tissues near the eyes which elicitsan immune system reaction. This further leads to inflammation and other signs of the disease.

Any person may suffer from Graves’ disease; still there are some risk factors that add to the susceptibility of this disease. These include:

    • Hereditary reasons

    • Females are mostly affected, especially women of forty years or below

    • Pregnancy or recent delivery

    • Smoking

    • Excess physical and emotional stress

    • Presences of other autoimmune disorders like serious diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis

    Treatment of Graves’ disease

The main aim of Graves’ disease treatment is to control and balance the levels of thyroid and reduce the effects of excess thyroid hormones. Some of the treatment options are as follows:

    • Beta blockers: Beta blockers can be used to obstruct the effects of excess level of thyroid hormones. This will bring relief from conditions such as anxieties, muscle weakness, cardiac problem, etc.

    • Radioactive iodine therapy: Radioactive iodine therapy includes intake of oral radioactive iodine. The thyroid gland makes use of iodine to produce hormones and therefore additional radioactive iodine leads to tearing down of the excess thyroid gland cells. However, it also has few side effects such as temporary decrease in the level of testosterone, tender feeling in neck, and increase in the hormones levels of the thyroid glands for a short period. It also increases the risk of being affected by Graves’ ophthalmopathy. This therapy leads to lessening of the thyroid hormones. Therefore in future, the patient may be required to go for thyroid replacement therapy to have normal levels of hormones.

    • Surgery: In this procedure the thyroid gland is removed. This treatment option also includes various risks. Therefore surgery must be carried out only as the last remedy. Surgical removal of the thyroid gland will also result in thyroid replacement therapy for life.

    • Anti-thyroid drugs: Anti-thyroid drugs affect the capability of thyroid glands to use iodine that creates hormones. These drugs have to be taken for a long time for good results. It can also be taken to increase the effectiveness of radioactive iodine therapy. This therapy also includes some side effects such as rash formation, joint pains, and liver abnormalities.

    • To treat Graves’ ophthalmopathy drugs such as corticosteroids can be taken, or orbital radiotherapy or eye surgery can be done.

Pink Eye – Images, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment
Pink eye is an infectious state of eyes, popularly known as conjunctivitis. It is a state where the conjunctiva lines, covering white part of eyes, get infected. As a result, blood vessels of our eyes become prominently visible and our eyes look red or pink in color. Conjunctiva lines or membranes retort to variety of bacteria, irritant, viruses, toxic agents and ongoing body ailments resulting in irritation and soreness of eyes.

  •  Is it contagious?

Pink eye is a contagious disease and patient has to take proper care of his eyes during the course of treatment so as to avoid others from catching it. Though contagious, timely treatment and precautions help patients to get over with this disease easily. Pink eye is not restricted to people of specific age group, however, it has been found that people normally catch pink eye in their childhood.  We shall now study various causes and treatment for pink eye along with precautions.

    Causes of pink eye

Pink eye or conjunctivitis is an infectious disease caused mainly because of virus, bacteria, allergies and irritant materials. It is a contagious disease when it is caused due to bacteria and virus, and can rapidly spread from one person to another by means of contaminated materials, water and air. Viruses responsible for pink eye are adenoviruses and are treated using medicines made out of acyclovir. Also, bacteria responsible for pink eye are staphylococcus aureus, haemophilus influenza, streptococcus pneumonia, N.meningitidis, neotrombiculaautumnalis and Moraxella lacumata.

Various allergens and irritants responsible are chlorine, smog and dust ticks.

    Symptoms of Pink Eye

It is very important to identify symptoms of conjunctivitis as it helps in timely treatment. Pink eye caused due to different reasons render different symptoms. Let us go through various symptoms in different scenarios.

Pink eye due to viral infection
When pink eye is caused due to viral infection, it is accompanied with common cold and sore throat as infection spreads through upper respiratory tract. Its symptoms are:

    • Excessive watering

    • Excessive itching

    • Usually infection initiates with one eye, spreading across other.

Pink eye due to bacterial infection
It is caused due to Pyogenic bacteria and like pink eye, due to viral infections, bacterial infection also begins with one eye and easily spreads through another. Symptoms of conjunctivitis due to bacterial infection are:

    • Redness of conjunctiva

    • Inflammation of eyelid

    • Mucus discharge

Pink eye due to allergens and chemicals
Conjunctivitis caused due to allergens and chemicals is not contagious and, generally, self-healing. Pink eye, due to chemicals is caused due to unwanted splash of alkaline or acidic substances which produce irritation in conjunctiva resulting in pain. Inflammation of conjunctiva also take place along with itching and excessive watering. It starts with inflammation of lower part of conjunctiva and gradually spread through all parts of eye. It can be diagnosed using litmus paper to measure pH level in water coming out from eyes. Anaesthetic eye drops are prescribed to patients to relieve pain.

Diagnosis & Treatment for pink eye

In all cases of pink eye or conjunctivitis, precaution against dust and dirt particles is most important along with normal medication. Truthfully, no special medication is developed for conjunctivitis apart from precautionary measures as it run through its course and gets cured itself. However, let us understand different methods for different type of conjunctivitis.

    • Pink eye due to viral infection: As discussed, viral conjunctivitis will run through its course and heal itself. However, one should rinse his eyes with fresh cold water 8-10 times a day for speedy recovery. One can also sooth his eyes by patting them with soft cotton cloth dipped in cold water. You should wear spectacles while going out as it protects our eyes from dust and dirt, and also prevent it from spreading.

    • Pink eye due to bacterial infection: In case of pink eye due to bacterial infection one must visit a doctor. Generally anti-biotic eye drops and ointments are prescribed for bacterial conjunctivitis. Along with anti-biotic you should rinse your eyes 5-6 times a day with cold water or gently pat with soft cotton cloth soaked with cold water.

    • Pink eye due to allergens and chemicals: Medication for allergy is prescribed by doctor for conjunctivitis caused due to allergens.

In all the cases of conjunctivitis, irrespective of root cause, one should properly rinse his eyes several times a day to keep them clean. As pink eye caused due to virus and bacteria is contagious you should wear spectacles to prevent it from spreading to others. Pink eye is a disease with no adverse effects and usually gets cured itself if proper precautionary measures are taken.

Basal Ganglia – Function, Stroke Causes (Calcification and Infarct)

Basal Ganglia – Function, Stroke Causes (Calcification and Infarct)
Basal ganglia are tissues in the brain that are located deep in the cerebral hemispheres. These tissues consist of the putamen, globus pallidus, and caudate. This part of the brain has a blood supply which may easily suffer damage or blockage. When there is impairment in blood supply in brain, it can result to stroke. A stroke that occurs in basal ganglia can lead to various symptoms such as changes in movement and difficulties in speech. Basal ganglia play a role in different functions such as control of cognition, coordination of movement, and regulation of voluntary movement.

    Causes of basal ganglia stroke

Aspects such as calcification or calcium deposits can cause impaired blood supply in the basal ganglia tissues. When there is abnormal calcium deposits in the area of brain know as basal ganglia, it can result to cognitive, psychiatric, and neurological complications. Some of the symptoms experienced by a patient with basal ganglia calcifications include mental deterioration, progressive speech impairment, chorea, urinary incontinence, partial motor seizures, parkinsonism, depression, dystonia, and memory problems.

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder, which is characterised by sustained muscle contractions that cause twisting, abnormal postures, and repetitive movements. Basal ganglia calcification may occur as a result of infections, metabolic disorders, and genetic diseases. Some common causes of basal ganglia calcification are pseudohypoparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism.

Basal ganglia infarct occurs when there is interruption of blood circulation in the small blood vessels or arteries located in the cerebral cortex. This condition could manifest at any age and it may be caused by certain medical conditions like blood disorders, hypertension, diabetes, and infections. When infarction occurs, there is death of tissues due to impaired blood circulation in the brain tissue. Patients seemingly recovering from infections from bacteria, virus, and fungus may experience basal ganglia infarction. This occurs when these microbes travel to the brain and cause inflammation and swelling.

The inflammation causes increased pressure, which prevents normal blood circulation. The inflammation may compress and rapture the small arteries. When there is inadequate blood flow, it affects the communication between neurons and tissues begin to die out. About 20 percent of strokes in adults occur within the basal ganglia. People with health conditions like diabetes are likely to develop sugar, lipid, and protein molecule coagulation, which form on the inner wall lining of arteries.

This situation causes the walls to thicken, something that leads to reduced elasticity of the vessels. Atherosclerosis may also cause plaque formation on blood vessel walls in the basal ganglia tissue. When blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia and polycythemia produce abnormal and abundant blood cells, this may in turn cause clotting and artery blockage.

    Symptoms of basal ganglia stroke

When stroke damages the basal ganglia tissue, it can cause body changes such as problems in body movement. Since basal ganglia controls and coordinates movement of body parts, when stroke occurs and causes damage to the basal ganglia, it impairs the communication in the nerve center. A condition known as ataxia may occur when the nerve center becomes damaged. The stroke may cause weakness in muscles, difficulties in swallowing, smiling and talking. The problems in swallowing, talking and smiling are caused by the weakened muscles of the throat, mouth, and face. Usually the basal ganglia nerves innervate the muscles.

Another problem witnessed in patients with stroke that damages basal ganglia is cognitive impairment. Stroke in basal ganglia affects the way a person can make decisions. It also affects the memory, attention, language, and other speech problems. The symptoms can improve with time but in rare cases, they return to normal.

Moreover, hemorrhagic stroke occurring in basal ganglia can lead to symptoms like vomiting, nausea, and headache. Bleeding can occur in the caudate nucleus of the basal ganglia and may spread to other parts of the brain. An irritation occurs on the tissue and nerves as a result of the bleeding leading to pain and vomiting.

Increased pressure which is created by the excess blood can cause some parts of the brain tissue to shut down. Loss of consciousness occurs when the parts of the brain begin to shut down causing a coma. In this case, an evacuation of the excess blood is required and repair of the damaged vessel causing the bleeding is needed immediately. Besides, basal ganglia stroke may also lead to personality abnormalities.

A person with the condition may experience change in judgment. One may be confused and takes time to understand things that are happening around him or her. A patient may be frustrated and anxious. Lack of interest and motivation may also be exhibited in patients with basal ganglia stroke. Other symptoms may include inappropriate emotional responses. You may find that patients with the condition laughs or cries for no apparent reason. Patients are also likely to suffer from anger and depression.

    Treatment

Basal ganglia stroke requires emergency treatment and the symptoms should be worked on when the patient wakes up. At the point of acute stroke, a patient may need to be placed in intensive care unit for close observation. In this time, treatment may include stabilization of vital signs, pain medication, and lowering the blood pressure inside the head.

Invasive treatment may be considered such as surgery to remove the blood and shunt surgical operation to drain the system of the fluid. When the acute stage of the stroke of basal ganglia is tackled, a rehabilitation is needed to get the patient back to health. Some of the rehabilitation therapies may include introduction of learning skills to replace those, which might have been lost. Areas of the brains are taught to take over the role of the damaged parts.

    Harlequin Ichthyosis

    Harlequin Ichthyosis
The condition known as Harlequin Ichthyosis is a rare one, and it affects the child when it is still in the womb. The condition is genetic, and not many cases have been reported. This condition is characterized by the thickening of the skin, about 10 times thicker, since it grows at a very rapid pace. The skin is cracked, and the child is covered in a “jigsaw puzzle” of armor-like skin.

The fissures surrounding the skin are a source of a lot of infection, and there is also the risk of getting dehydrated, since there is a lot of loss of water. The child is also less capable of managing the environmental temperatures. Sometimes the child will find it hard to breathe due to the thick plate of skin over the chest. The fingers and toes of the child, may suffer permanent damage due to this rapid growth of skin. The eyelids of the child are heavy, and they may turn inside out.

The child has to undergo constant care to avoid infection, and also to ensure that the skin is properly hydrated. The mortality rate of this disease is very high, and very few children reach the age of 1. If a child manages to get through the first year, then the prognosis improves.

The mutation of the gene ABCA12 is the one that causes the skin to grow rapidly. This gene is found in the upper layer of the skin, and thoughts its purpose is not well know, scientists believe that it is the one that is responsible for the transport of lipids and also the differentiation of the skin’s cells.

Since Harlequin Ichthyosis is a very rare condition, there has been very little research to find ways of dealing effectively with the condition. There has been a movement to look for ways of treating the condition using gene therapy.

http://www.Symptoms-Causes-treatment.blogspot.com detect diseases at an early stage symptoms, and find out the causes and treatments best suited.

     Symptoms of Harlequin Ichthyosis

Children born with this condition have deformities in the face and head, and they may have poorly formed ears, or they may be absent altogether. The area around the eyes is prone to infection since the eyelids are inverted, and the eyes may bleed upon birth. The child will seem to be having a wide grimace since the skin around the lips will be severely pulled apart. The child may find it hard to fold the fingers, toes, arms and feet, since the thicker skin will not bend easily. The fingers tend to be widely apart, and this makes it very hard for the child to grasp anything. Children suffering from this condition, mostly have more toes and fingers than normal.

     Diagnosis of Harlequin Ichthyosis

It is only though physical examination and genetic testing, that doctors can diagnose this condition. This can be noticed when the child is in the womb through the use of ultrasound. If the scans show an abnormal pattern in the skin, then the doctor will perform a 3D scan to make sure of his findings. If both scans are not definitive, then the doctor will ask for a genetic test. With genetic testing, the results are conclusive, since the doctor will see the mutation of ABCA12. The doctor can also do a skin biopsy, which will show if the cells are growing at an abnormally high rate.

    The Treatment

As mentioned earlier, this disease was fatal in the past, due to sepsis, dehydration, and the difficulty in breathing caused by the plates. The main cause of death, however, was the sepsis, and many children would die within a few days.  Today, doctors use retinoids, to help care for the children. In 1984, one child was born with the disease and is reported to be living quite well. The early use of oral retinoids has led to a higher survival rate.

    Harlequin Ichthyosis Survivors

Due to the rarity of this condition, many people do not know about it, and those who have lived are well documented. So far, there are three well noted cases of survivors; Nusrit Shaheen, was born in 1984, and lives in the UK. Four of her siblings contracted the disease and passed away. She now is one of three children in their family. The other two do not suffer from this condition. Hunter Steinitz, was born in 1994, lives in the USA, and has been mentioned in National Geographic. He is one of the twelve people in the USA who have this condition. Ryan Gonzalez is another American living with the condition, and he was born in 1986, making him the oldest American with this condition.

This condition has made people tend to shy away from the sufferers, thinking that the condition is contagious. This is not the case, and there have been campaigns to sensitize people about this terrible condition, that cuts short the lives of many innocent babies.

HIV is abbreviation of Human Immunodeficiency Virus which is a preceding condition of AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. This is a life threatening physical condition which destroys significant cells of the body.  The condition causes several symptoms. One of the common symptoms of the condition is HIV rash. This is a kind of rash on the skin which is commonly recorded in HIV patients. It is studied that around 80% of the HIV sufferers experience HIV rash symptoms. HIV rashes are often reddish in color. These rashes can be extremely itchy in nature. Appearance of these rashes may differ according to the severity of the disease. In most cases raised small bumps are also observed.

  • HIV Rash Types

There is no concrete description of HIV rashes in the medical records. But HIV rashes can be divided into four classes which are as follows:

    • HIV rashes due to medicinal reaction:

There are antiretroviral medications that are known to cause skin rashes as side effects in some situations. These drugs are suggested as treatment for HIV infection and its associated symptoms. Some of such antiretroviral medicines include nevirapine, abacavir and amprenavir. These are few of the drugs that can lead to HIV rash. Ceasing the use of these medicines may possible ebb away rashes, but one should do this only after consulting your doctor.

    • HIV Rash of Acute nature

These are acute rashes which occur due to HIV infection. These rashes are noticed within few days from the time of affliction of the infection. There are other symptoms as well which are recorded along with these rashes. Chest, back, palms, etc, are the common regions for these rashes to occur; nevertheless, they can be seen on any part of the body. These kinds of rashes are often difficult to be diagnosed and may need thorough investigation through several tests.

    • Symptomatic HIV Rashes

The third phase of HIV infection may causes dermatitis which in turn leads to symptoms such as skin anomalies. These sort of rashes are usually pinkish or reddish in appearance as well as they may be itchy at times. These may last for 1 to 3 years according to records and estimation. Some of the common body regions where these symptomatic rashes can be found are groin, underarms, torso, facial skin and back.

    • HIV rashes due to Herpes

HIV sufferer may also have herpes and such individuals are prone to skin problems. If HIV is also accompanied by herpes then it becomes difficult for the patient to handle the condition. HIV and Herpes are STDs or Sexually Transmitted Disease. This makes the mortality rate extremely high. There are other symptoms of herpes which may be experienced along with these rashes. In such a situation the rashes are often filled with fluid. After few days these bumps bursts and spread further. The condition is very serious and if not controlled earlier, it may also lead to death.

    Causes of HIV rash

HIV rashes mostly occur in people suffering from HIV infection. The HIV virus is a dreadful virus which can affect the tissues in the vaginal and anal lining. The virus can also affect mouth or eyes. There are three stages through which the infection progresses gradually. Occurrence of painful rashes as well as other flu-like symptoms indicates the primary stage of infection. The dermatologic symptoms may take place during seroconversion when noticeable antibodies are generated in oppose to infectious agents present in blood.

In some situations some antiretroviral drugs as mentioned above can also trigger allergic reaction or side effects causing rashes to appear. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus can severely influence and deteriorate the immune system causing the body to lose its ability to fight minor and major invaders of the body and infection. This also contributes to cause rashes on the skin.

    Diagnosis

Chorionic skin rashes are often related with several skin issues which are usually difficult to diagnose through conventional physical screenings. In order to rule out HIV as underlying cause of rashes there are two routine tests suggested to the patient. The first test is specific to count of CD4 cells. People who are infected with the condition often have low CD4 count. The second test suggested is determining the amount of viral load in blood. Infected individual with high viral load are susceptible to reduced CD4 cells and faster progression of the condition as compared to those with low viral load. The efficacy of new treatments and medications can be evaluated by understanding the count of virus in blood.
