What Causes Edema in the Legs

Edema in medical terminologies is defined as collection of fluid in the interstitial spaces or serous cavities. There are two type of edema

  • Pitting Edema
  • Non-pitting Edema

Pitting Edema

  • This is edema of venous origin therefore the swelling commonly occurs in the lower limbs which are most dependent. However if patient is recumbent (lying down or bed ridden) then edema may be present over the sacral region.

Causes of Pitting Edema

  • Excessive salt intake
  • On steroidal treatment
  • Premenstrual phase
  • Cardiac edema (in congestive cardiac failure)
  • Renal edema
  • Hepatic cirrhosis
  • Portal obstruction
  • IVC (inferior vena cava) obstruction
  • Anemia and hypoproteinaemia
  • Beriberi
  • Pregnancy
  • Non-pitting Edema

    • Non-pitting Edema is also called as lymph edema.

    Causes of Non-pitting Edema

  • Congenital- Milroy’s disease or primary lymph edema
  • Filariasis
  • Allergic angioedema
  • Traumatic
  • Post thrombophlebitic
  • Lymph edemas in young women with stout build whose legs are abnormally fat
  • How to Prevent Edema

    • Avoid excess salt intake and have a well balanced diet with emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables. In edema due to anemia, beriberi and hypo-proteinaemia diet plays a major role.
    • Foods like bananas, black grapes, plums, strawberries, raisins, onions, carrots, radish, celery, tomatoes, honey, fenugreek, lettuce, spinach, soy beans and almonds are all helpful in treating edema due to anemia.
    • Beriberi is caused due to vitamin B1 deficiency.

      Foods rich in vitamin B1 include peas, beans, oat meal, the outer germ layer of cereal grains and peanuts. These should be included in diet to reduce edema caused due to beriberi.

    Natural Remedies for Edema

    Commonly used home remedies are pineapple, Squil, barley, cucumber etc.

    • Pineapple relieves body of water logged condition. It helps stimulating kidney activity and helps removal of excess water from body.
    • Squil is also valuable in edema as it has diuretic properties and increases urine formation, bulb of this herb is used for this condition.
    • Barley seeds are very useful in reduction of edema. 1/2 teaspoon of barley seeds are boiled in one liter of water for 15 to 20 minutes and strained. This water should be consumed in a day. It has diuretic action and helps in removal of excess fluid retained in the body.
