  • Skin becomes blotchy or blue and very hard. Blisters may also appear.
Main causes of frostbite include:

  • Frostbite occurs from exposure to cold weather.
  • Occurrence of frostbite depends on the temperature, exposure-length and wind chill.
  • Damp clothing, alcohol consumption, below-average body fat can increase risk factors.

Natural Remedies For Frostbite

  • If possible get out of the cold first.
  • Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed.
  • Frostbitten areas should never be rubbed or massaged and avoid ointments.
  • For frost-nip: Apply direct warmth by blowing on the areas. Your frost-nipped hands can be kept under warm armpits, and for nose apply warm hands. There may be a slightly tingly or burning sensation.

  • For Superficial Frostbite: Immerse the affected part into comfortably warm (100 – 105 degree Fahrenheit) water and keep replacing warm water when necessary.
  • For Deep Frostbite: Prevent bruising. Wrap the area in soft material or blanket and keep it elevated till you reach the hospital.

How Can You Prevent Frostbite?

  • Dress appropriately, so that the outer layer is water and windproof. Wear proper footwear and cover face, nose and ears adequately. Instead of gloves wear heavy mittens.
  • Keep away from smoking and alcoholic beverages.
  • Loss of body heat can be slowed down, by applying a moisturizer while going out.
  • Keep a sleeping bag or blanket in your car while traveling during winter. It helps to keep you warm.
  • Skin temperature is lowered if petrol splashes on exposed skin, so be careful at petrol pumps.
  • When the temperature falls below 20 degree Fahrenheit, avoid going out.
