Vitamin D Deficiency Parathyroid Hormone: Hyperparathyroidism Treatment

Vitamin D Deficiency Parathyroid Hormone: Hyperparathyroidism Treatment . The parathyroid hormone (PTH) is secreted by parathyroid glands. Parathyroid hormones control the concentration of calcium and inorganic phosphorus in the blood.

Vitamin D Deficiency Parathyroid Hormone

When calcium level in the blood is too low, PTH is released from the parathyroid gland. The released PTH promotes the breakdown of calcium from the bones and mobilizes it into the blood.

PTH also activates the vitamin D for calcium absorption from the intestine and kidney.

In hyperparathyroidism, there is excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone due to primary disease in the parathyroid gland such as cancer or secondary usually to renal disease.

Primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism differ in their relationship to vitamin D.

Parathyroid Hormone Level

When there is primary hyperthyroidism, there is excess of calcium in the blood. High level of calcium in the blood inhibits the enzyme that manufactures calcitriol in the kidney, thus causing vitamin D deficiency.

In case of secondary hyperparathyroidism the calcium level is low. The low level is caused by kidney disease and vitamin D deficiency. It is also observed that severe vitamin D deficiency results into increase of parathyroid hormone.

Hyperparathyroidism Symptoms

Vitamin D deficiency and parathyroid disease such as hyperparathyroidism can give rise to symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression.

  • Anxiety.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Kidney stones.
  • Excessive thirst and urination.
  • Vomiting.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Acute pancreatitis.
  • Backache and joint pains.
  • Osteoporosis.
When parathyroid hormone is produced less, the condition is called hypoparathyroidism.

The disease is not as common as hyperparathyroidism.

Treatment Of Hyperparathyroidism

  • Long term management may be required in case of hyperparathyroidism to control osteoporosis.
  • Regular monitoring of blood calcium level and vitamin D is necessary.
  • Dietary modifications are required for regulating calcium the blood.
  • If tumor is the cause, it has to be removed. In most cases the gland is kept intact.
  • If parathyroid gland removal becomes imminent, than calcium and vitamin D supplementation becomes necessary.
